Ignored e-mail

The following is an e-mail I sent, more than a month ago, to the authors of this site/distro, using the contact form, and to which I never got a response back.

I'll present the full text of it and then I'll add some things about it.

(Because I can't find any reference to a "moderator" on the forum, I'm sending this message through this mean, instead...)

I'm writing you because of one thing that is bothering me *much*, concerning the messages exchanged on the forum.

When I registered on your site, upon asking for an e-mail address, it said "the e-mail address is not made public". And when I check my e-mail options in the "Account information" section (in "Home » My account") the same statement is there - that my e-mail address "is not made public".

Yet, in one exchange of messages on the forum - where one of the users used some mailing-list, that I was not aware of and haven't signed in to - I was surprised to see my e-mail address being displayed there - not masked, and in a way that anyone can understand it.

I've asked that person to delete it, but, although that same person said she(?) wouldn't do it any more, she was unable to delete the part of the previous post where my e-mail address is shown...

And therefore, I would like to ask you:

First, if you could somehow change the fact that the e-mail addresses of people who haven't signed in to any mailing-list, or agreed to disclose their e-mail addresses, are shown to this being something that is either not permitted or, if that's impossible, something that a person is, at least, warned about.

Second, if you could - at least, just for this time - *please* delete the reference to my e-mail address, in the post that I'm talking about - which is this one: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/how-use-tor-trisquel#comment-26805 - since the person who made that post tried to delete that part and was not capable of, any more.

It's just that, if I knew that my e-mail address would be made public - contrary to what is said when people sign in - I would have used some other one instead. Since I'm a person who values my privacy much and I don't want people to know my e-mail address.

Than you in advance.

Additions:

The first thing that I asked is something that I know might implicate some hard work on the authors' part. And something that I was not expecting anyone to do, just because I asked them to. But, I thought it wouldn't hurt just to ask...

(I know this is mainly a volunteer project. And it's not that I don't value volunteer work. (I've made *tons* of volunteer work in my life.) The suggestion I made was just something that occurred to me. And, although I'm still not sure if I'm going to adopt this particular distro or not, I'm already thankful to the authors of it for the great work they've done in just promoting Free Software itself.)

The second thing that I asked is something that seems, to me, to be pretty simple to do. And all I'm asking is for the people responsible for this site to *honour an agreement that was made*.

And, since I never got a response back, I would like to know what do the people here, on the forum, have to say about all this...

I filed a bug about this some time ago. http://trisquel.info/en/issues/2003

Consider getting a £5 a year domain name like me.uk with email. I use
gandi.net

Look at my address for this mailing list.

We are trying to get a developer meeting setup. Please consider bringing this topic up at that meeting. See this thread for more info.

Hi!

First, I must take responsibility for that mistake, I read your email, set that (again) as a high priority issue for this cycle, and actually went to edit that specific comment to remove your email address... and then I got sidetracked.

I was hit with the idea that editing another person's post was not a good idea, so I thought of contacting that user to ask him to remove the address himself; then I noticed you'd said he'd already try to do so and couldn't, and so I started to look at what could have prevented the change...

Days passed, I didn't find the root cause, and replying to you and mailing the other user got submerged in the back log of things tagged as "really important".

About the whole issue, it's something we've been debating at large since the problem was found, it doesn't have an easy technical solution apart from separating the mailing list and the forum, and we would rather not have to resort to that. A change in the information page has the problem of sustainability with site updates, but it's being looked into as an option.

As a summary, please accept my apologies for not being responsive with you and this issue, I've just wrote the other user now requesting that he deletes that line or gives me any feedback about the problem if that's not possible, and will be looking at the root cause with renewed forces.

Also, as Sir Grant said, the developer meeting could find a small space for a discussion about this.

Hello there, david.

Now, I'm the one who must apologize for the delay in a response...

I wanted to let a full week pass, before I responded here in the thread - in order to give enough time for everyone to first post their responses - but then Christmas came, and, after that, came some serious personal problems I had to deal with. :\

I've seen that you have already deleted the reference to my e-mail address, as I had asked.

Thank you very much for that. :) I'm very happy with the fact.

That's what I was most interested in. Since, I seldom post things on this forum, and that person seems to be one of the very few who respond in such a manner and said she wouldn't include my e-mail in her posts any more.

What I asked about you altering your system to not allow this to happen any more was (more truly) more of a suggestion, for the people responsible for this site to take into consideration. (Which I've learned, in this thread, that is a problem you are already aware of and trying to do something about.)

Thank you very much for your time.

It has also been an interesting way to see how your project works and a good way to let everyone know that, although you can all commit some flaws (Who doesn't, in everything computer-related?) you are truly trying to do the best work you can - as I said, to a great extent, on a *volunteer* basis - which is something quite remarkable for a project which demands such a hard intellectual effort on your part.

All the Best to your project.

This is also been added to the discussion list:

http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/proposed-policies-procedures-solutions

I'm going to try and bring these issues up at the first meeting and edit the wiki after with any answers. It appears this is being looked at.

** updated wiki to let others know the problem is being looked at

This is why I use an older hotmail email address when posting on forums. I don't mind the spam and it doesn't contain personal emails with information that links to my private life.

Thank you very much, all of you, for your answers.

It's relieving to know that you are all already aware of this problem and are trying to do something about it.

No hurry on my part, since, what affected me has, in the meantime, already kindly been solved.

All the Best to your project.
