Also, I cant seem to turn off the stupid voice synthesis. It happens every time i switch between windows. How do i turn that stupid voice synthesis off?

Turn off Orca in the accessibility settings in the Control Panel. Should work.
In fact, just turn off everything accessibility-related (unless you need it).

Thank you so much. However, it still happens when i type in my password, but not after. It's still annoying as all hell however.

One sure fire way should be to uninstall orca, that is if nobody needs it at your computer.

What command should i use to purge orca from my system?

lembas

A rejoint: 05/13/2010

If you wish to do it on the command line this should do itsudo apt-get purge gnome-orca
You can also use e.g. the Synaptic package manager for a GUI.

I wouldn't purge it- just because the next autoremove would get rid of both
trisquel and trisquel-recommended.

moxalt: you can purge orca without any issue whatsoever. Those are metapackages.

sudo apt remove --purge gnome-orca

Though I am well aware that trisquel and trisquel-recommended are metapackages
(and so in theory the actual packages beneath them shouldn't be removed) in the
past (when trying to purge Evolution for example) it said that a whole bunch of
libraries, dependencies, and a few other programs (!) would also be removed.
Not 'to be autoremoved'- actually *removed* in the uninstallation process. That
put me off purging packages under trisquel in the future.

Also, isn't there a potential problem with future updates to the metapackage?
Say the trisquel metapackage is updating and has new dependencies added. You
wouldn't get the new updates to the Trisquel desktop experience without
trisquel proper. Isn't it just a safer bet to have the metapackages there and
leave alone? Just in case? Or does that sort of thing not really happen?

That's correct moxalt. I remember that. When I tried to purge evolution it wanted to delete a lot of stuff that should not be deleted.
I remember I had to delete evolution using synaptic and leaving out two libraries that are somehow strongly tied to the other important parts of the OS.

In general, I don't purge any application programs that come on the
live dvd, for fear of accidentally removing things that should not be
removed; have broken installations this way. I can go into the Main
Menu section on Settings, and untick items I don't want to use. Since
I've allocated plenty of disc space for the root filesystem, having a
few extra packages around is not a problem.

One dilemma i have:
I have a steam account and apparently, there are good, original games for GNU/Linux.
Can you help me with this?
Also, i have a tv tuner card. it is a winfast pxdvr3200 h.
is there any drivers that will work for this TV tuner?
And is there any software that lets me watch TV on Trisquel or any GNU/Linux distro for that matter?

Recommending or supporting non-free software is against our community guidelines (it is not "helping" you to make you surrender your freedoms): https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/trisquel-community-guidelines

Steam is proprietary software. Whose "raison d'être" is to impose restrictions (DRMs) onto the user.

The Winfast DVR3200H requires a proprietary firmware. More generally, if old hardware does not work with a recent Linux-libre kernel, then it probably cannot work with free software.

>>Recommending or supporting non-free software is against our community guidelines (it is not "helping" you to make you surrender your freedoms):

I wasn't recommending nonfree software. I was just looking for some good games for my machine. All i said is that i had a steam account. This was before i had Trisquel. This was before i knew free software existed. I hope you understand what i really mean. Steam had importance for me back then because i brought my favorite game from there (Doom/Doom II/Final Doom). When i learnt about the FSF and Trisquel, I came to see how bad steam can be. I really understand what you mean.

>>The Winfast DVR3200H requires a proprietary firmware. More generally, if old hardware does not work with a recent Linux-libre kernel, then it probably cannot work with free software.

I brought it secondhand from a recycling center. When i opened the hood on my 'new' computer, The first thing that i saw was that TV tuner. I really wanted to use that machine to watch tv. But free software only gets limited support outside outside the FSF's sphere of influence. Do you know any free firmware replacemets for my aforementioned tv card (Because i dont want it to go to waste!)

As I wrote: "if old hardware does not work with a recent Linux-libre kernel, then it probably cannot work with free software". If there would exist a (reasonably stable) free firmware, it would probably be in Linux-libre.

Yes. There are primarily two standards and it works with both. There is a third, but its pretty much used in China and only a few other countries. In practice this TV tuner should work everywhere that has switched over to digital.

I won't help you with Steam, but here are some libre games I can recommend, in no particular order (though they will probably not be on par with what you're used to in proprietary games):

* SuperTuxKart - sudo apt-get install supertuxkart
* Kobo Deluxe - sudo apt-get install kobodeluxe
* Project: Starfighter - http://starfighter.nongnu.org
* Dopewars - sudo apt-get install dopewars
* Alex the Allegator 4 - sudo apt-get install alex4
* Freeciv - sudo apt-get install freeciv freeciv-sound
* Xonotic - http://www.xonotic.org/
* Hedgewars - sudo apt-get install hedgewars
* Armagetron Advanced - sudo apt-get install armagetronad
* Torus Trooper - sudo apt-get install torus-trooper
* Tumiki Fighters - sudo apt-get install tumiki-fighters
* Warzone 2100 - sudo apt-get install warzone2100
* MegaGlest - sudo apt-get install megaglest
* Endgame: Singularity - sudo apt-get install singularity
* Teeworlds - sudo apt-get install teeworlds
* Adanaxis - sudo apt-get install adanaxisgpl
* OpenClonk - sudo apt-get install openclonk

Thumbs up for kobo deluxe.
It's really intense I have to say. At the moment, i'm at stage 20 and shit is getting a little bit insane here.

The downside is that (as far as i can see) there is sometimes no way to survive, no matter how good your reflexes are.
And i'm not sure if you can avoid those situations.
Besides it's a great game.

And here's a few more-

* 0 A.D. - sudo apt-get install 0ad
* Beneath A Steel Sky - sudo apt-get install beneath-a-steel-sky
* Chess - sudo apt-get install gnome-chess
* Freedoom - sudo apt-get install freedoom
* FreeOrion - sudo apt-get install freeorion
* Lincity-NG - sudo apt-get install lincity-ng
* ManaPlus - sudo apt-get install manaplus
* Nexuiz - sudo apt-get install nexuiz

* OpenMW - Isn't in the repos. You have to get it from the official PPA, like
so:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openmw/openmw
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openmw-launcher openmw

A few of the games I play.

Beneath a Steel Sky has been released under a libre license, as have Flight of the Amazon Queen and a few others. Both of their licenses forbid selling copies of the games by themselves, but you can work around that by bundling them with any other unrelated file, like a simple Hello World program. The FSF accepted the SIL Open Font License as libre on this basis.

As for the confusion, I think (if I remember correctly) that it's mostly because you do actions by right-clicking, not left-clicking (left-clicking only observes things).

Great! i installed superTuxkart, and the very next day, trisquel gave me the black screen of death after bootup. In other words, no login screen after bootup. the linux-libre said that something failed on startup and it was the Active directory server or something like that. Can you help?!

Freeciv = clone of civilization (video game)
Supertuxkart = clone of MarioKart
xonotic = clone of quake 3?

Maybe you are right. They are not as good as the proprietary games. What about doom and Quake? they have freely available source code (but not game data)

> Supertuxkart = clone of MarioKart

Nope. They don't use the same engines and have different game mechanics and tracks.

> xonotic = clone of quake 3?

No, not at all. Xonotic isn't even a clone of CPMA (Challenge Pro Mode Arena, a mod of Quake 3 Arena); it's its own game with its unique game mechanics. In fact, it is based on DarkPlaces (which is based on Quake 1, not Quake 3).

Hey, I was at least right about freeciv being a clone of another popular game.

onpon4

Actually, while Freeciv has rulesets that try to emulate Civ 1 and Civ 2, the primary ruleset is distinct in quite a few ways, and the Freeciv engine supports many things these games don't support.

Of course not. What about games with freely available source code, but with proprietary game files such as Doom? Do they count as free or non-free?

I consider them acceptable- I don't have a problem with non-free artwork, but
