LibrePlanet 2013 is just days away. If you can't be in Cambridge in person, you can tune in live at http://libreplanet.org/wiki/LibrePlanet:Conference/2013/Live on March 23rd and 24th to catch all the action.
We'll be streaming every session in each of the three program tracks. You won't want to miss highlights like:
* Free Software Foundation president Richard Stallman presenting the 2012 Free Software Awards
* Keynote speakers Karen Sandler and Leslie Hawthorn
* Debian project leader Stefano Zacchiroli
While you're watching the livestream, you can participate in conference chatter on IRC #libreplanet on FreeNode, and on StatusNet (#libreplanet).
And if you can't tune into the livestream, don't worry. We'll make video of the sessions available on http://libreplanet.org/2013 in the days after the conference.
Happy hacking,
Libby and Zak, Campaigns Managers

More news like this from http://www.fsf.org/free-software-supporter/
A few other highlights:
- Rubén Rodriguez will be talking about Trisquel
- Loic Duros will be talking about LibreJS
- Denis Carikli (GNUtoo) will be talking about Replicant
I wish I was there!
It's like the Mecca of the free software world. I hope to make a pilgrimage to LibrePlanet one day, myself. :)
RMS also gave a short speech, where he raised many worrying issues including:
Raspberry Pi:
The system requires a non-free blob, and the computer cannot be booted using only free software. not to blame the Raspberry Pi project, but it's getting harder and harder to be able to replace these blobs because it gets put sooner in.
Reverse engineering:
Because of the non-free blobs that are more and more required by the hardware, he very strongly entreated on schools to teach their computer students hardware reverse-engineering, so we could figure out how these systems work and run them in freedom.
Phone Networks:
as many of you know, RMS does not carry a cellphone with him. The reason is, that the phone operator can record all the calls and triangulate the position of a phone. He brought up an old idea wether it's possible to lock to a certain station with a directional antenna and if that would be useful or practical.
Here are some pictures of Rubén's speech at Libre Planet 2013:
Excellent speech, and good viewing all 'round!
I've been really happy to see the changes that I think are needed in relationship to free software going mainstream. Some of it is just being discussed and acknowledged now and other stuff is actually happening. Trisquel for instance is switching to an LTS + backports system.
While the overall message hasn't really changed at all the acknowledgement of our own communities failings and/or at least a change in the landscape is really exciting. While it doesn't solve the problem its a start to solving it.
Richard Stallman for instance talked about our failings to get manufacturers to cooperate. While he isn't saying to abandon those efforts or to abandon reverse engineering efforts he is acknowledging the problem is too big to actually solve this way. We need to change how we think abut solving these problems. Instead of utilizing stock hardware for instance we need to start focusing on building our own hardware. It may not be cheap or easy. However it will hopefully lead us to a point where users can at least get free software friendly systems. And we aren't talking just about the ability to run a 100% free OS here. We are talking about a completely free system without microcode, binary blobs, or a non-free BIOS.
Is there any ETA when the videos of the sessions will be published ?
I am currious to see RMS and Ruben's speech.

I'm not sure where, but I read somewhere that the videos are being
processed at the moment and will be published soon!
I am also looking forward to seeing them.

Fabian,
I was aware of this and think we all can read....
The question still remains: Is there any ETA ?

At least Ruben's Speech has been published here:
http://trisquel.info/en/trisquel-libreplanet-2013
Thanks for the link, I was not aware of that reply.
I don't know about you, but playing back the original ogg resulted in a horrible playback experiences for me.
Neither Firefox, nor Chromium or VLC were able to skip through the video without loss in audio sync. I decided to upload the video to Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr0ao8QYcb0
Feel free to skip forward to something like 25 minutes for the speech of Ruben.

Do you mind making the original available (maybe privately)? I would
then upload it to archive.org.

Heya Fab,
what do you mean with making the original available ?
I simply uploaded the orignal ogg Theore file from the Trisquel webpage to Youtube and Google did the rest (-> converting).
Best regards,
H.
The video could use some editing. Besides the lack of proper seeking, the first 20 minutes are deadweight, and there is a lot of background hiss.
It's better if you first download the whole video and then watch it. There should be no seeking or syncing problems then.
I downloaded the video prior playing back. As I mentioned various programms had severe issues playing back the local file. It lost AV-sync. I wasn't able to skip forward, etc.
My system is an AMD E350 with 2x1.6GHz and normally perfectly able to play back WebM stuff up to 1080p and H264 up to 720p without any hardware acceleration. So it is rather unlikely that my system was cause of the playback issues.
The transcoded version I grabbed from my Youtube upload didn't share any of the issues mentioned above.
The OGV works fine on my weak netbook (which cannot play back 720P videos other than YouTube without dropping audio sync). You probably need a newer video player (e.g. mplayer2 or VLC).
Here is Matthew Garrett's video from LibrePlanet about secure boot and restricted boot available on his website:

@lembas
Any idea when the session videos will be available on http://libreplanet.org/2013 ?
Its been quite a while now.
Sorry but no idea. I'm waiting for them myself.

I've been able to find a few videos/slides for some sessions which I
found interesting:
Trisquel talk by Ruben:
https://trisquel.info/en/trisquel-libreplanet-2013#comment-32564
Restricted Boot talk by Matthew Garrett:
http://www.codon.org.uk/~mjg59/sb/mjg59_secure_restricted_boot.ogv
Debian and GNU talk by Stefano Zacchiroli (slides only):
http://upsilon.cc/~zack/talks/2013/20130324-libreplanet.pdf
Andrew.
OK, I asked the fsf about when the videos will be released aproximately and here is what John Sullivan answered:
...
We don't have an exact date yet, but it will be soon. :) Getting them together is quite a bit of work, but
we will announce it loudly as they become ready.
...
Any news, when they are going to release the videos?
Its more than two months now. :(
Well "soon" may have a different meaning for different peoples ;)
Let's not be impatient but I wonder what takes so long to get together all the videos ?!?
I inquired with someone working at the FSF along with another email I sent although the person I asked isn't in charge of it and didn't know either.
Maybe Lembas could get in touch with Libby or Zak, who sent him the conf invite. They would know the reason for delay and actual ETA.
>Maybe Lembas could get in touch with Libby or Zak, who sent him the conf invite. They would know the reason for delay and actual ETA.
I did actually a little bit ago but then there was neither, no reason and no eta. So I guess we will have to wait. And maybe poke them again.
Too much to do too little time.
'soon' cannot mean >2months in this context, thats just wrong.
General expectation is, within few days(<1week). Like, Ruben's speech was out on 27th Mar & Matthew Garrett's on 24th Mar.
Months of delay only means few new people will watch it, and that existing Libre fans would be annoyed due to prolonged waiting.
If Ruben's speech is added to LibrePlanet's LibreConf2013 page as an 'unofficial release', it might set things rolling.
>If Ruben's speech is added to LibrePlanet's LibreConf2013 page as an 'unofficial release', it might set things rolling.
This is a good idea, I'll do it now.
The planets have aligned most favorably! First gNewSense 3.0 and now
https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/first-batch-of-videos-from-libreplanet-2013-published
That's good news indeed. Thanks!
6 of the 7 videos in this batch have upload dates 19,20April2013.[1]
Its weird, they never showed up in search results.
I hope the rest follow soon.
