3D Printer

Hi there,

I am thinking of buying a 3D printer, but I do not know anything about them.

I would like to use only Free Software, that's the first requirement I can think of. The second one is price. Then comes usability, well-documented, community-supported...

Any advice?

By the way, should have I posted this question to The Troll Lounge or is it ok to send it here?

Thanks!

Aleph Objects is a Colorado based company that manufactures and sells LulzBot 3D printers that are certified to Respect Your Freedom. :-)

Hey, thank you.

Sorry, I was not accurate at all when I said I did not know anything.
Actually I knew about the existence of those Lulzbot 3D printers from
the Free Software Foundation site, but I wanted to know about those
cheaper 3D printers now in the market, if they work ok with only Free
Software, and opinions about them.

Thanks again!

As for the cheaper printers currently in the market, I say the same
thing that I would say about other hardware/devices: Imagine that our
"free/libre software house" is burning (and it probably is already,
because the number of blobs in the original Linux kernel keeps growing),
now notice that the RYF-certified devices listed in the FSF page at
[[https://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/endorsement/respects-your-freedom]]
are the "big fire extinguishers", and the free/libre software friendly
devices (those which are in the market but that we are lucky for finding
out that they work, like the ones that have B or A grade in
[[https://h-node.org/]]) are the "fire delayers".

Fire delayers only delay fire, but only big fire extinguishers can
extinguish all the fire in the "burning free/libre software house".

That said: if you are considering buying *new* hardware, buy those that
are RYF-certified, this way we can keep the free/libre software movement
alive. If you are getting used hardware, then contribute your
tests/findings to h-node.

Oops, another thing I forgot to say: I had a look on h-node too, but
found no 3D printer, maybe I did not know how to look it up.

Yes, I agree. Nice analogy.

But now imagine that Trisquel and Debian are not gratis, and Trisquel is
expensive and Debian cheap. With the money I have, I might en up
becoming a Debian buyer (using only its Free repository). That would be
my case for 3D Printers now.

I have a Reprap (Prusa i3) which I built myself. Took about four evenings to complete it. Runs on an Arduino Mega. Bought the DIY set for 450 euro.

Great learning experience for constructing, simple soldering and programming.

Excellent!

Does everything work ok with only Free Software? Would there be any
reason to exclude the Prusa i3 printer from being eligible to the
Respect Your Freedom certificate?

Well, perhaps the providers of it have to contact the FSF to ask for an
evaluation?

If there is indeed interest, then I guess one could ask the providers to
do it. However, I don't know the providers nor their product very well,
so I'm not able to do it right now, also because of time
constraints. But I can aid in text reviewing before sending if you do
wish to.

Thank you. I just wanted to know if anyone knew about any freedom
restriction on that printer (Reprap Prusa i3 running on an Arduino Mega).

Well the firmware it runs on (Marlin 3d printer firmware) is gpl3:

https://github.com/MarlinFirmware/Marlin

I use slic3r and printrun for printing which are also gpl3 (and in the debian stretch repos)
