Interesting new card from Asus that uses an older Nvidia chipset which can be run 100% blob free. Lots of goodies including passive cooling, 4 HDMI ports, and ability to overclock. All for around $50. Just figured I'd share the news in case it's helpful for anyone.

Why should I buy this super-low-end GT710 when I can buy a GTX750Ti (GM107)?

Even if I don't need gaming performance, I'd rather buy GT720 with passive cooling (fanless) which support 4k resolution via HDMI 2.0.

Sparing $20-30 possibly?

Then of course, if you do not need those extra bucks you might choose to spend them on an upgraded GPU.

None of those 750s are going to have 4 HDMI slots. This would be good for someone like me who plugs in several non-4k monitors.

That too.

If you have such specific demand, then go ahead please.

However, for most average users, I'd like to recommend GT720 or GTX750Ti.

Is that the best GPU that works with free drivers and firmware?

I'm pretty sure it is, I agree with that.

The GTX 780 Ti should work with Trisquel and other libre OS.

I have a GT 730 and while it didn't have all HDMI it had noticible lag when driving even 2 monitors. Has anyone here tried running 4 monitors on this GT 710 ? That being said it does have 2GB of VRAM vs the 1GB of my GT 730.

I'm sure that GM107, or its professional version, GM107GL, is the best free/libre Nvidia GPU.

Intel's Iris Pro 5200/6200/6300P may be even better under GNU/Linux. However, CPUs with Iris/Pro integrated graphics are relatively rare. Some of such powerful CPUs are ultra-low-voltage Haswell/Broadwell and may have Boot Guard permanently enabled. If you want to build a powerful desktop or find a powerful notebook, here are some suggestions.

For desktops, buy a Z97/H97 motherboard and one of the following CPUs: i5 5675C, i7 5775C, or Xeon E3 1285 v4. You can enjoy the mighty yet still free/libre Iris Pro integrated graphics.

For notebooks, I know that Terrans Force X411 has Iris Pro 5200 (from i7 4750HQ CPU). However, I'm not sure whether this model has Boot Guard.

Oh, I like this, minimalism, low power, doesn't need a fan, could plug into a laptop mini-PCIe slot with an adapter and there's even Windows XP drivers for it, so if you need a placeholder gaming appliance for game engines and scripts that are yet to be reverse-engineered.

It's a very versatile card and it's pretty good considering it was just designed as a daytraider GPU with an added niche for old Socket 775 HTPCs to have acceleration for newer codecs.
