Any of you get a Steam Controller recently? For libre games of course, right? :-)
If you cannot get it to work, there's always https://askubuntu.com/questions/686214/how-do-i-get-a-steam-controller-working without resorting to the non-free Steam program.
Is there any libre game with support for a controller? Or do they all work with the controller by default? That'd be interesting.
The nice thing about the Steam Controller is that the left touchpad emulates the WASD movements and touchpad on the right will emulate mouse movement if you set the game to keyboard controls. Of course, you can use it as an Xbox (360/One) controller via xinput in the game options as well if the game supports it.
Off the top of my head, SuperTuxKart, Freedoom, and pretty much every emulator support controllers.
Even games that don't directly have gamepad support can be used with a gamepad with something like QJoyPad.
But lots of games directly support gamepads. A lot of the time it isn't even particularly advertised if it's a simple game (e.g. most of Kenta Cho's games).
I have my super-nintendo usb-controller;
don't need anything else. period.
The dpad on the Xbox One controller is actually pretty good and an improvement over the 360 one. I've used the One for a few side scrollers and it works great and should be pretty good for emulators as well.
The 4.2 kernel has decent support for the Xbox One controller, but support for the newer model (with better bumpers and headset jack) isn't there yet. It is in the Steam OS kernel and also via steamos-xpad-dkms from https://launchpad.net/~mdeslaur/+archive/ubuntu/steamos for Trisquel 6/7 and Ubuntu 12.04/14.04. It basically just takes the newer xpad.c driver and patches it in via DKMS.
