Is anyone else confused by Rhythmbox?

I'm not sure if there's a problem with the program or if I just don't know how to use it. When I double-clicked on a file in Caja it opened in Rhythmbox. When I closed the program though, the music continued playing, and to stop it I had to click on the speaker icon, re-select Rhythmbox,and pause the music, then close the program again.
At some point, when I tried to open a song with Rhythmbox, a notification showing controls temporarily appeared, and the music started playing, and then after the song was over it started playing other music which was not even from the same directory. It was from a folder within ~/Music.
I decided to switch my default music played to mpv, by right-clicking on a file and selecting "Open With" > "Other Application...", but it turns out that only sets the default application for a specific type of file, so I had to do that same process for mp3, ogg, and wav. Is there a way to set the default application for all music? I found a menu in Trisquel > System > Preferences > Personal > Preferred Applications, which suggests a way to change the application for all "Multimedia", but it was already set to mpv. When I changed it to Rhythmbox then VLC, the default for mp3, ogg, and wav did become VLC. (Also mpv no longer shows up as an option.) It seems like this setting does not affect .mod or .xm files, which are both more obscure music formats.
Am I missing something or is the default behavior confusing?

Yes, that is what Rhythmbox is like. My father is also confused about this feature. Maybe listening to music when working, while the player is in the background describes this feature. If you want to listen to a single track, my recommendation is to just open it with vlc, which is pre-installed on Trisquel.
Anyway, I think Rhythmbox is great for managing and listening albums.

Rhythmbox as some other collection manager players like Clementine, Strawberry, Amarok are intended to "set and play", they will go in the background and continue to do its thing (run through the entire playlist you defined). While players like VLC, mpv, they often work as per "file basis", so double click behavior are often more straight forward.
When double clicking on a music file, it's very likely that it will add the file to a current playlist and then continue such playlist once the selected file is over, which might seem not obvious at first.

I tend to believe that mime-type definition and "media" are called different, so maybe set the main music files that you own to the desired player will be an easier move.

For many years I used Clementine, but with the inevitable coming of T12, I found the support starts to get behind, so I switched to Strawberry, which seems so far like a good successor for what Clementine started. I think you might like to try it too.
If Rhythmbox is not primarily intended to be used to play individual files, could the initial default in Trisquel be changed so that VLC or mpv is the default?
The main difference between those 2 is that opening a second file in VLC will stop the first file, while opening a second file in mpv will play both simultaneously. Both players seem to handle selecting multiple files at once as expected (by playing them all and then stopping). mpv automatically closes when it's done, while VLC stays open (not sure which is better).
I'm not sure I should open an issue for this since it is an opinion, but I think Rhythmbox will be confusing as the default player.
I think that default music players normally are just whatever is the favorite music player for that distro's lead developer. In this case, Ruben may be one of those rare people that likes Rhythmbox. I'm with you, though, I've never been able to get it to work in a way that makes me willing to use it. I also stick to VLC and MPV for the most part.

Happy to hear that, it seems Ruben is a man of great taste.
I don't think that Rhythmbox is a bad music player. After playing around with it for a bit, I like that I can see the total length of all the music in my Music folder, I like that I can shuffle all my music together easily, and I like that I can skip a song by clicking on a button in the notification for a song that's just started playing.
But it does seem somewhat unsuitable for double-click play, because of playing more songs after the one clicked, and because of the music not stopping when closing the main window. Maybe it would be better to reconfigure Rhythmbox so that it only plays the double-clicked item, and add a warning when closing the window so that people know how to stop the music if thy want?

I tried using rhythmbox once, but I forget how it works, I think i didn't try it for long because it didnt interest me. Was it music player or video player or both?
