Applications on startup issue: VPN client

It's in gnome-shell, in teak tools, I just can't add any program to load on startup.
But there is a specific program dedicated to that, so I tried and linked to /usr/share/applications/the_vpn,
but no success.
It's a .deb package that I installed using dpkg -i,
ando for some reason, when started, there's no way to add it to favorites for it to stay on gnome-shell's dock.
Thank you.
"Add" it to the "Startup Applications" in the "System Settings".
I admit I wasn't precise enough with my words, but it's what I meant by "But there is a specific program dedicated to that, so I tried and linked to /usr/share/applications/the_vpn,
but no success."
It's added, but it doesn't work.
I added the name, browsed to the app, and in the "command" part, the path got written down automatically. I left the description part empty.
EDIT:
First, I found a workaround (since right-clicking on the docked icon didn't add it to the doc): just drag and drop it on the dock.
Second, in "Startup Applications", although it doesn't explain why we can select a path, I ended up figuring out that "command" was there for a reason, so I typed the name of the program just as I would in the CLI, and it worked. Problem solved.
