How can i make ascii art from a picture easy?

Install the package caca-utils. It contains the command img2txt among others. It has a manual page.

The pictures it makes look great. Do you know how to make them black and white only?

You can use e.g. imagemagick to do it:

mogrify  -colorspace gray filename

If you like ascii art btw, you can watch your videos in ascii using VLC. Just choose ascii or color ascii in the video output selection in prefs. (Try in in virtual terminal for maximum effect once you've selected the output in GUI.) Quite trippy!
