I am trying to install cinnamon desktop environment.

For installation, synaptic wants to delete the trisquel-desktop-common-data package. I have no idea whether this makes sense or not, but it cannot be uninstalled

I get this error message: "E: trisquel-desktop-common-data: installed trisquel-desktop-common-data package post-removal script subprocess returned error exit status 1"

How should I solve this?

When I search the forum for I get a number of 10+ year old threads about issues with XFCE desktop. I have in fact XFCE installed and now want to install Cinnamon along it. Bit apparently that causes some issue.

I am basically pleased with XFCE but some this just cause to much trouble. For instance, the display settings (with one extra display attached at times) do not last. Often, men I re-attach the external dislpay, the settings are reset. That's is annoying.

Since I do not want to spend too much time with these, I wish to use Cinnamon which I have been very pleased with for years.

Or will the issue be solved, if I uninstall XFCE?

Can I safely uninstall the trisquel-desktop-common-data package?

I have now successfully uninstalled XFCE.

But when I try to install Cinnamon, the problem with the trisquel-desktop-common-data persist.

Synaptic wants to delete it, but deleting it returns the aforementioned error.

I wanted to know more about what the trisquel-desktop-common-data package does and if it actually necessary.

A search on the internet helped me find this thread on this very forum: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/ecne-installing-xfce4-desktop-fails-dpkg-errors-makes-apt-stop-working

Following andyprough's example, I successfully removed the package. After that, installing cinnamon was hazzleless. I have not reinstalled the package, as andyprough did (in order to install XFCE, which I have just uninstalled).

But I still do not know what it does or if it is necessary. I will now try to restart, crossing my fingers that everything works...

Since you are a user of the Synaptic Package Manager, click on the row for trisquel-desktop-common-data, then on the "Properties" and finally on the tab named "Installed Files". If trisquel-desktop-common-data is installed, you will see that the packages provides some configuration files (/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/privacy-options.conf, /etc/X11/xorg.conf.vesa, /etc/fonts/conf.avail/trisquel.conf, /etc/fonts/conf.d/01-trisquel.conf, /etc/printcap, /etc/skel/.face, /etc/skel/.xchat2/servlist_.conf, /etc/skel/.xchat2/xchat.conf, /etc/thunderbird/pref/trisquel-settings.js, /usr/share/gconf/defaults/90_trisquel, /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/x_trisquel.gschema.override, /usr/share/gnome/applications/mimeapps.list), four menu entries (/usr/share/applications/browser.desktop, /usr/share/applications/home.desktop, /usr/share/applications/trisquel-wm-chooser.desktop, /usr/share/mate/applications/mate-wm.desktop), and one font (/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont/FreeCondensed.ttf). To take a look at those files, without having to install the package, you can execute in a terminal:
$ apt download trisquel-desktop-common-data
You can then "open" the .deb file with any good archive manager, such as Engrampa (by default in the MATE edition of Trisquel, I believe) or File Roller or 7-Zip or...
