Can't view other partitions or removable media?

I've been having problems trying to view and access removable media and other partitions through nautilus. I'll insert a disc and won't get any prompts or icons on the desktop or the side view. I can use cds through VLC with "/dev/foobar". Anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks :)

When I insert a removable medium onto this Trisquel system, A nautilus
window, showing the files and directories, gets created, but I have to
give it focus with 'alt+tab'. Also, the volume gets mounted in the
'/media' directory. If I insert a removable medium without any
allocated partitions, or with volumes not recognized by my system, it is
only accessible with disk utility.

The drives all have filesystems on them. I can manually mount the drives but nautilus doesn't automatically bring up a folder nor does it let me see the drives unless I use sudo mkdir and mount them manually.
