Compiz-plugins-extra wants to uninstall compiz!

That's weird. I see two packages that could be the same: The one you are
talking about called compiz-plugins-extra and another one called
compiz-fusion-plugins-extra . I don't know what are differences between
each other but I have compiz-fusion-plugins-extra with no problem. Why
you don't try to have compiz-fusion-plugins-extra installed and see if
that gets you were you want.

compiz-plugins are from the 0.9 series while compiz-fusion plugins are from 0.8.
Actually I have no problem in installing the package compiz-plugins-extra. Have you checked all updates are installed? You might still want to try this:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install compiz-plugins-extra

that should solve the problem. :)
