Compiz on startup

I really hate compiz. I don't like the interface and it takes up way more RAM than metacity.
I have gone to the GNOME System Settings and changed to metacity using "Windows manager and effects" multiple times. However, the interface is always switched back to compiz when I log in. When I go to the "Windows manager and effects" after this, it still says I'm using metacity. The only way to actually switch it to metacity is to switch it to compiz, then back to metacity.
How can I prevent compiz from being the default at log in? I want to uninstall it but I'm afraid GNOME will try to run it anyways, rather than metacity, causing a bricked DE.
Try downloading "Compiz Fusion Icon" from the repos. Launch it first. (It is in the "accessories" menu) Once launched, it sits next to the clock, and if you right-click on it, one of the menus is "Select Window Manager". Hover over it, then select Metacity. I'm not sure if it will stay that way, but it is an easier way to change it back.
Try typing metacity --replace into a command prompt and log back in.
I hope that works for you.
Just cut and paste the command above.
On my screen the forum post barely shows that there are two dashes before the word replace above and a space between the word metacity and the dashes. I don't want to cause confusion.
I tried this and all of the bars on my windows dissappeared. When I logged out and back in it was compiz.

This is a known bug:

You can just enter "echo > ~/.disable-compiz" in the terminal, and next
time you reboot you should be running Metacity.
Andrew.
After I do this can I safely uninstall compiz?

Yes, if you want. I did this on my previous installation. I think I did
apt-get purge compiz* to remove all of the compiz packages.
Andrew.
I posted a fixed version of the script here.
