We can also think about VLC.

Yes VLC is a good choice (it's by default with Uruk 1.0)

Audacious is really good for audio files. No need for all kinds of extra codecs since it has its own.

VLC is easier to use than GnomeMPlayer, though both could be included.

As I wrote in https://trisquel.info/forum/first-development-alpha-iso-images-trisquel-80-flidas#comment-106380 (which received +4!):
In my humble opinion, OggConvert should not be included in the default install anymore. If you want to replace it (I transcode but I am not certain it is such a common need among the users), prefer Transmageddon: http://www.linuxrising.org

Also we will probably have system-config-printer-gnome in Trisquel 8 because it has been installed by default in Ubuntu MATE 16.04

There is also Curlew (By default with Uruk 1.0) :
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2016/06/curlew-gtk3-video-converter-linux/
Curlew is a free multimedia converter for Ubuntu Linux that features small package size, few library dependencies, 100+ output formats, easy to use UI, and more..

It is not free software because freedom 0 is incomplete:
The user may use the work for any good purpose and he may not use it to harm others or violate the permissive principles of Islam ^7).

Frankly i am no specialist about "Waqf" General Public License

This is the informal English translation of Waqf General Public License. Anything but the Arabic version of the license has no value except for convenience of our English speaking users. When we talk about the License we refer to the Arabic version, which is the only one we officially offer, we will try our best to make other translation as accurate as possible but because of the nature of human languages we use one single reference language.

if it's non free than this should be discussed with Uruk GNU/Linux & the Uruk Project

The tribe has spoken re: vlc. How about audacious for the library-based audio player, and asunder for ripping cd? I have no suggestion for conversion, but Audacity for recording and editing audio? For torrenting, I suggest deluge.

Upstream Ubuntu ditched Brasero as no one really burns CDs, is not that active, and is clutter on the ISO

I agree with t3g is more an special case software now. Not many need it, probably better to keep it on repository

I would advocate keeping Brasero, or having some other disc burning software pre-installed by default.

It's the cheapest way to spread free software since SD cards and thumb drives are expensive.

Optical media are important for freedom since CDs (other than Sony rootkits) come with no DRM, and DVD DRM has been broken, so we should encourage their survival.

PS: First post!

What is Trisquel's policy on Snap packages? Are they allowed? I say cuz the latest VLC is available as one and I'm not sure if there are theming issues.

Its one way to have the latest without a PPA.

"What is Trisquel's policy on Snap packages? Are they allowed?"

I don't know that Trisquel has a policy on Snap packages one way or the other. My proposal is that all software added to Trisquel be compliant with https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html regardless of how it is packaged.

I trust the default sound recorder on MATE to be good enough. Nobody uses Sound Recorder ever, yet it is an indispensable tool at any moment the system is just installed (or there's a problem) and we want to check that the microphone works.
-Cheese. Nobody uses Cheese ever, yet it is an indispensable tool at any moment the system is just installed (or there's a problem) and we want to check that the webcam works.
-A burner of optical disks. I suppose that Brasero is OK.
-A music player. I have beek OK so far with Rhythmbox.
-A video player. VLC or Totem are both fine choices.
-An extractor of audio. I suppose Sound Juicer is OK.
-Transmageddon, because if we want media in free formats, we'll need to convert it, won't we?
-Would Kodi (formerly XBMC) be too heavy?

rhythmbox???
Its terrible! I still don't know how to work with that program. I never saw a so counter-intuitive program. every time I want to play a sound file I use videos program! Just to say how terrible is rhythmbox!

Of course it does. Matroska is just a container format and can be used with several different codecs, though, so it could easily be that some Matroska files are unplayable due to the codecs they use. You're going to need to find out this information to solve the problem, but ultimately it's FFmpeg (VLC's backend) that can or can't decode a codec, so that's the component you need to look at.

I found a package called "libavcodec-extra". Try installing that.

Thanks.

Regarding the "Of course it does" thing I am glad and annoyed at the same time. First of all I glad to hear that I am wrong (if I am). But I have tried quite a lot to find ways to make vlc work with Matruska and it annoys me that I couldn't find the solution. It must be a very common scenario. I'm not blaming anyone, just being annoyed.

> But I have tried quite a lot to find ways to make vlc work with Matruska and it annoys me that I couldn't find the solution.

Like I said, Matroska files can contain just about any kind of data, so you can't tell just by the fact that it's a Matroska file whether or not your system can play it. It's not like WebM or MPEG-4 where only a couple designated and related codecs are valid. In those cases, it's pretty easy to tell because there aren't a lot of possibilities. But with a Matroska file, it could be anything ranging from Theora to VP8 to h.264 and just about anything else.
