Might I ask which pod you're using? I'm trying to choose one. :p

I've been told to avoid Join Diaspora, I can't remember the exact reasons but I think it was because their servers are hosted by Amazon.

Hi Heather,

The word is quitter, but make sure you choose the right domain. A list with all domains is available here https://gnu.io/social/try/.

I don't think the two can be compared. Diaspora is more like Tumblr or Facebook and GNU social more like Twitter. Different platforms, for different kinds of content.

pizzaiolo - diaspora is decentralized, you can choose your pod, you can sign up and always use your pod with tor. As long as you post your stuff as "limited" it stays between you and your contacts. I have yet to see idiotic stuff like selfies and food pictures on the D so I guess it is not like mierdabook..
I have actually researched a little about this amazon stuff and only joindiaspora.com is hosted on the amazon servers!
I recommend two pods: poddery and pod.orkz.net (I use pod.orkz).

I only have one particular problem with Diaspora, and that is that it's stuck with a JavaScript-based interface. It's in need of a good client API and client.

That's the reason I don't use it. GNU social has a reliable API simliar to Twitters which makes it easy to build clients for desktop or smartphone usage.

On Topic:
I've been using GNU Social and it's predecessors StatusNet & Laconica since 2008. No other social network dragged me in for such a long time. There are so many GNU/Linux guys, frendly techies and interesting people there - I just love it!

Diaspora community is working on their API, using their Loomio group:

I had high hopes for Diaspora, and I was quite disappointed when joindiaspora.com finally allowed setting up accounts. A friend and I spent a few hours trying to connect with each other, and gave up in frustration. That was a few years ago though, from the comments here, it seems to have come a long way since then.

I just set up an account to test out Seen.is, under my usual username 'strypey'. If any Trisquel users have an account there, feel free to add me as a contact.

Do any of you have any important knowledge to share about Seen, or the related Unseen.is? For example, what is their record of respecting and supporting software freedom?

I use GNU Social on Quitter, mainly to chat to people. I'm not good at 'social networking' outside of directly talking to people and friends.
