Has anyone had a go with these models, or models like them?
I know TriSquel is based on Debian, and Debian works on the Dell XPS L512X, but I don't know whether anyone has tried either of the above laptops out with those distributions without the non-free components.

If cpu is Intel and gpu Intel, I think yes. Macintosh AirPort I think that wouldn't work. I had to much problems Mac's AirPort from MacBook Air 2009, because it is a broadcom, and have a proprietary connection, can't be replaced for one different.
