Duplicate Icons in Gnome Shell

So I've just recently upgraded to Trisquel 7 (been using Toutatis since it came out) and I'm loving it so far.

One problem I've encountered, though, is since installing gnome 3 shell, I have duplicate icons for many applications in the "Activities" menu.

Not only are the icons duplicated, but they're slightly different and sometimes the names are different, like they're different versions of the same apps. Furthermore, they seem to actually open different applications when clicked, so it looks like I actually have duplicate versions of all these apps installed. They're mostly control-panel type apps.

Here's a list:

* Input Method / Keyboard (Different name, same icon)
* Onboard / Onboard Settings (Different name, same icon)
* Network / Network (Same name, different icon)
* Online Accounts / Online Accounts (Same name, different icon)
* Printers / Printers (Same name same icon)
* Software Updater / Software & Updates (Different name, different icon)
* User Accounts / Users & Groups (Different name, same icon)

Does anyone know how I can remove the duplicates and just keep the correct / most recent versions of these apps?

Thanks.

I do not think they are the called actually are the same. They are not on my system. For instance, "Onboard" launches the virtual keyboard, whereas "Onboard Settings" launches its setting window.

Anyway, you can edit the menu using the "Main menu" utility (available from the "Activities" or from the "System Parameters"). Just remove the duplicate launchers. You can remove some entries or just hide them.

Input Method / Keyboard: Those are completely different things. An input method is something like Anthy for Japanese input: using a small number of keys to produce a lot of different characters (think thousands).

Onboard / Onboard Settings: As the name implies, "Onboard Settings" controls the settings of "onboard" (the on-screen keyboard). "Onboard" just starts up the on-screen keyboard.

Network / Network: I don't have this duplication, so it must be something extra you installed.

Online Accounts / Online Accounts: Same, I've only got one of these.

Printers / Printers: I do have this. It seems Trisquel ships with a separate program for configuring printers that it uses by default (system-config-printer, some utility from Red Hat), but GNOME also has its own printer configuration utility.

Software Updater / Software & Updates: These are completely different and complementary. The former is a graphical utility for updating your software. The latter is for configuring your software sources (it was called "Software Sources" in Trisquel 6).

User Accounts / Users & Groups: I have this, and I'm not quite sure what the story is. "User Accounts" is the one in the system settings dialog, but Users & Groups has a lot more configuration options. It looks like "User Accounts" is probably the official GNOME one, and "Users & Groups" is the one chosen for Trisquel.

Well this is a fresh install of Trisuqel 7, and the only thing I've installed extra is gnome-session and gnome-shell. (Well, a few other little apps, but nothing that should cause this).

Here's a screenshot of what I'm seeing:

Keep in mind that half of these are not actually duplicates.

The ones that really are duplicates seem to be there because Trisquel uses different programs by default than GNOME, and those that GNOME uses by default are either required or recommended by various GNOME packages. Try "aptitude why ", that'll tell you what on your system recommends or requires the given package.

Again: "Onboard" and "Onboard Settings" are two different commands using the same icon. That is the only repeated icon I see on the screenshot.

In the bottom left corner, they're not the same icon, but there are very similar icons for two items called "Network" and two called "Online Accounts". Is that normal?

According to "Main menu":

  • "Network" calls the command 'network-admin' and its description is "Configure network devices and connections";
  • "Network Connections" calls the command 'nm-connection-editor' and its description is "Manage and change your network connection settings";
  • "Online Accounts" calls the command 'credentials-preferences' and its description is "Online account credentials and settings";
  • The other "Online Accounts" calls the command "gnome-control-center online-accounts" and its description is "Manage online accounts".

They are all different commands. You can decide that you will never use one of them and simply make it disappear from your menu in one click on a check box in "Main menu".
