Well, I know I am going to get burned alive for asking this but...
I need a software to encrytp text and files, that works under both windows and GNU/Linux. It has to be this way, since the person I need to communicate with only has access to a windows pc. Also, it would be REALLY great if it was a portable app, so no traces would be left behind in the machine. Now, if it would also work in Android (to use with cell phones...) it would really be great.
Any suggestions, even if they are not the perfect solution for this are welcome =)
THANKS

Oh and I will need to make thigs look easy... the person in question has no idea about computer and technology in general :P
I am exagerating of course, but really, it's a very low level tech person. So, let's have that in mind.
THANKS

As has been said gnupg, Gnupg for Windows (though for obvious reasons I have never looked into whether there's a portable variety of it). In addition K-9 Mail with APG both from F-droid.org for Cyanogenmod / Replicant / Android.

Be warned that K-9 Mail only does what it claims is PGP/INLINE . Its PGP/INLINE is in fact broken in a once well known kind of way that was the reason for inventing PGP/MIME and will play havoc with many a correctly written GNU/Linux mail client. The good news is that Thunderbird with Enigmail PGP/INLINE is broken in exactly the same way so you'll be able to read the emails somehow.

As portable apps on USB sticks and mobile phones are so easily lost or compromised I would suggest you don't use the key on them for identity purposes. Limit it to merely securing the communications. And it is doubly important not to make the gpg newbies mistake of not doing the gpg --gen-revoke on the key and storing the output somewhere very safe given these devices are so commonly stolen.

Well, you can use gnupg for Windows, and gnupg.

Else you can recommend him/her BitMessage, I *think* it encrypts automatically the message while sending them, however, I'm pretty sure they can be intercepted, so best is : gnupg and BitMessage.

Also, if you didn't yet check out prism-break.org, even if it recommends non-free software, such as Mozilla Firefox, which is non-free because of a Trademark problem

All Bitmessage messages are encrypted. Bitmessage was designed with privacy and anonymity in mind.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions... Unfortunatly I really need something SIMPLE.
I used to have a software called "furius chypher" that has disappeared unfortunately. It was a simple window, that you would enter the text, a passphrase and that was it, it would encrypt everything. I need something like that, but for text and files... Maybe thunderbird with enigmail and the tor addon would be an option... But I was really hoping that a more "simple" solution would exist.
Not really for me, but because I am in the process of trying to convince some people to encrypt emails making it a little more secure the fact they use emails like gmail and such... I myself would maybe use one (to make it easier on them) if they would use free software solutions to encrypt things first (making it easier for me).

Pretty much anything java would work.
Quick search reveals these (not tried them):
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ohcrypt/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cryptds/

http://www.7-zip.org/

Simple, AES-256 only. Many front ends, drag and drop.

EDIT: other platforms too, just search "7z or 7zip". In Trisquel respository, OS X app and so on.

The 7-zip program includes a nonfree RAR archiver.

I did not know that. What about ARJ? It's supposed to have encryption, but what kind?
