Sorry, but I prefer the current layout. Is more objective and simple, for one end user is better.
The "standard" forum layout is confusing in my opinion.
While I agree that the current forum is easier to navigate, the contents displayed are random. We have topics about Trisquel, Free Software, software news, events, announcements, support, etc. I wonder what newcomers think of that.
Additionally, when someone is having a conversation in a topic (what I actually mean is that he has a couple of posts) and replied last I don't know what was his last message, especially when such person replies to someone in the middle of the topic like I am doing right now.
I like the idea of some change in the Trisquel forums. There is certainly room for improvement.
1) I think that for the Trisquel project at the moment it is better to stick to a single place for information and discussion, instead of creating an additional new forum like yours.
2) We can easily and quickly improve some aspects of our forum here, such as a getting a button to click on for adding html links, using the existing forum software, Advanced Forum. I wish that such available functionality were added. This could be achieved while still keeping the discussion in one of the modules built into Drupal, the progam on which the Trisquel website runs.
In the hope of speeding this up, here is a list of Drupal Advanced Forum modules that could be added without too much difficulty:

3) If we were to upgrade our forum software here, for example, to reduce spam (a critical bug) and improve user experience, I suggest using Vanilla Forums, for which there is a Drupal plugin. Vanilla is fully free, has commercial backing behind it and has several modern functionalities. Vanilla POP also could support mailing lists, which is how many people read the content on this "forum".

This sounds a very very good idea, however un-till the developer appoints and allows people access to his site nothing can be done.
I will set up a sub-domain and have another play with Drupal and see if I can get My head around it.

I would definitely look into the latest release of Drual. I'm pretty sure it is what Rubén will want to move to. I think it is sufficiently supported now for a transition to take place.
Drupal definitely has a learning curve to it. It's not just an apt-get install drupal. It's a bit more complicated and powerful than that.

I checked and I am sorry to say that Vanilla POP is a hosted, Enterprise (paid for) service only. It is not available for download.

I agree with the comments of stefano and icarolongo. For me the forum I
use here is much easier to use than traditional forums (and I wouldn't
use it if not for the mailing list integration).
There is a problem with having multiple subforums: where would these
questions be posted?
- AVideoPlayer doesn't play videos using the GPUVendor HD BigNumber card
- ComplexScan cannot use the buttons of SecretManufacturer Scanner
SmallNumber
- cannot install on a system having a GPUManufacturer SD BiggerNumber
card
The first one might be for General Help, Applications, Hardware and
Multimedia. The second for General Help, Applications, Hardware and
maybe Multimedia (is scanning a multimedia thing? certainly it has both
text and images which are different media). The third one for General
Help, Installation, Hardware and Multimedia. Having only one category
would make both posting and searching easier.
I think it might be common for a single thread to be both a support and
non-support discussion, e.g. not working wifi evolving into a software
freedom and hardware discussion. This would make a detailed
categorization of whole threads more misleading.
(An unrelated issue is that the patched kernel we use probably doesn't
need so many forums.)

Some excellent points Michat. As I said at the start only My ideas and the forum I've set up is easy to alter and set up differently.

Keep playing with it. Get more comments. Maybe there is a combination that will work better. The worst that happens is you gain a new skill set.
Very good you have an interest in improving the Trisquel forum.
In my opinion the priority for now is one better "download" page. Is confusing for new users(many versions for example).
I think one video explaining step-by-step is good for a new user.
(Download, burn iso, boot on your computer, etc)
Agree with that, the Download page is a little bit confusing, something like the Ubuntu page could be much easier (in some cases but not at 100% since the Ubuntu page can still be very confusing, mostly for torrent download).
I like the idea of a step-by-step video.. I will try to do one and post here just to see if this could provide some additional help for new users.
Such a video exists for Trisquel 4. It would be nice to have one for the upcoming LTS version.

Is it possible to post and read via e-mail with the layout/software you
are suggesting? I rarely use the web interface or so called the forum. I
prefer the mail. The rare times I use the forum is when I have to reply
to an old thread or to one for which I've deleted the mail in my
client.
Of course the web part/forum should be as useful as possible to the
people who use it, but when discussing, proposing and planning changes
to the forum, please keep the mail functionality - reading full messages
via e-mail and replying to them.

First, congrats for actually proposing something :).
The current forum layout doesn't bother me. I don't really like forums with hundreds of sub-forums. A bit overkill as far as I am concerned.
And more importantly, I sure hope we won't create a second Trisquel forum. Our small community cannot afford to be split!
On the other hand, I think a Free Distributions forum would be a terrific idea, with a sub-forum for each distro recommended by the FSF, plus sub-forums for common discussions about Free Software issues. Uniting all Free Software users instead of splitting the community would definitely get my vote!
I agree a free distros forum would be nice.
When I came to these forums, I was used to phpBB and found this forum a little bare. Since then I've come to value and like the simplicity.
One thing I've been thinking about is could the separate languages be somehow automatically translated to every other language. There is a wealth of interesting material dangling just outside my grasp. I realize machine translation is still fairly shoddy and nobody is going to do it by hand.
The Trisquel site already is way better than the Ubuntu page when it comes to locating the checksums for what you have just downloaded...
