Hello everyone,

my first post today, so intro:
i am a programmer in a non-free world, but learning about free software from trisquel, have to applaud your effort as i didn't know there was free alternative to ubuntu/fedora
i have a local linux user group meeting tonight around 7pm EST where i'll be showcasing trisquel to the group as they have cited repeated dis-satisfaction with user interfaces like gnome3, unity etc. :)

i would like to learn what you all recommend as a free software that can be installed in trisquel that allows me to take fullscreen/crosshair screenshots
regards,
gsvolt

I'm not sure what a crosshair screenshot is, but all you have to do to take a fullscreen screenshot in Trisquel is press the Print Screen key. To take a screenshot of the active window, press Alt+Print Screen.

Tried that, no go.

I was in Midori, hit printscreen.

I expected the image buffer will be in the memory for me to paste in say mtPaint but that proved to be false.

Any other thoughts?

Also: In the meantime I did search on fsf, and found shutter-project.org but I don't know how to install it in trisquel

If you're using Trisquel Mini, the Print Screen key might not work the same way. In standard Trisquel, hitting Print Screen runs a program called gnome-screenshot, or something like that. Anyhow, it's a part of Gnome, so it's not included in Trisquel Mini.

screenie-qt? Licensed to GPL v2 or so it seems.

Or just use Gimp

You might be looking for Shutter. It aims to be a complete screenshot tool.

It is in the repos. Package name "shutter". Install it through "Add/Remove software".

I did have a look at shutter's homepage but didn't initially see the GPL v3 licence.

Looks a good application.

I recommend you to install 'gnome-screenshot' (through 'Synaptic Package Manager'). Then you will find it in 'Accessories -> Take Screenshot'. But even so, the 'PrintScreen' key would not work for you.

In Trisquel, yes.

Shutter just does not fit with the lightweight nature of Trisquel-mini. It has 68 dependencies and weights 91.6MB after installing which is astronomical (taking into account that it is just a screenshot tool), compared to gnome-screenshot which has only one(1) dependency and weights 373kB after installing. But it is only your choice what software you prefer.

Xfce's screenshot program, Xfce4-screenshooter comes in at about 5 MB when installed, with no *major* Xfce dependencies, so I'd say that's a good pick.
