GNOME Fallback forked.

Yeah it did happen. Now we have 3 gnome forks.
Why so much hate for GNOME 3? Seems to me that there are lots of improvements that are beneficial, and I actually quite like GNOME Shell. For those who don't like shell, maintaining the "Fallback" - but treating it as a normal WM - would be a better approach, right?
I am neutral to the shell as a desktop. It does, however, require 3D acceleration to function, which is not available for many of our users.
On a second hand, the Gnome team dropped the fallback code for the 3.8 series and as such they won't maintain it anymore. That is why a forked was needed. Yeah there is MATE, but it is forked from Gnome 2 and not 3. Now it boils down to personal preference.
And 2 desktop environments with the acronym CDE.
I'm getting dizzy...
If you wanted this, I don't know why you'd choose this over Cinnamon. But that's just me.
At first I thought Cinnamon would fit future Trisquel releases. I don't know how the 2D version of it is since it was insanely laggy on my hardware (didn't happen with 3D version). I had no idea how to replicate the Trisquel look and feeling in it and that means we would deviate from our standard user experience. Cinnamon is very different from Gnome in all usability aspects. I don't mean it is any harder but it does have a small learning and adaptation curve.
I think of the words 'consort' and 'mate' as being synonymous. When I
first heard the name of this new proposed de, I thought, "Oh, no,
another GNOME 2 clone"! Now that I read the whole piece, I'm wondering
if it isn't what Rubin has already done with our Trisquel 6 desktop? If
Consort can benefit from all the improvements made in GTK3 over 2, have
the accessibility stack found in GNOME 3.4.2, and keep all the features
found in, for instance, Trisquel 6, all without the need for 3D
rendering, I'm very interested in seeing this succeed.
Cheers,
Dave H.
MATE is named after a drink, not a reproductive act or the British slang, so the name of this new fork is definitely not synonymous with or even related to MATE's.
I think this is a good idea. Not because it's particularly useful (I likely won't use it), but as an alternative for people who don't have 3D acceleration working (such as people who have ATI cards).
I especially like that they're putting an emphasis on compatibility with GNOME 3, whereas MATE is just kind of doing its own thing.
I don't know whether I'll switch to Consort, but will watch it as an
alternative for those who don't like or can't use the GNOME 3 shell.
