The building manual says:
If you want to enable VGUI support, you need Half-Life 1 SDK to build vgui_support library.
The SDK is proprietary software but I can build it without it, I guess. I can make without the vgui.
What I don't clearly understand is, if it requires only proprietary data (artwork) or also scripts are included, as is the case with frogatto (there is a lot of stuff in the game folder and I know the game is quite heavily scripted). I'm ok with non-free data, I'm not ok with non-free software and I really don't want to slip again, I promised it on the icon of Ignucius I keep on my wall.
I'm quite ignorant on the matter. I'd like some help, maybe someone knowledgeable can clear it out for me.
This is my favorite game and I'd really really really like to play it in freedom :)
Have you contacted the people involved in the code release to ask them? Do they have a FAQ somewhere? I've heard great things about HalfLife and I'd love to have a go at running it on Trisquel! Also, this would be something we'd definitely want to make available in GOLD if that project ever gets off the ground. Keep us informed.
Hi strypey. I sent a mail to the developer. If I receive an answer I will update you.
Half Life is wow.. I will never forget when it came out, the game blew my mind. I think I finished it 20 times. I know it by heart, each texture, each sound, and still I want to play it again and again. :)
Oh, and btw I attach here the answer of the mail..
I would be worried about game code itself. Engine is just a tool to create a game, so while you have an GPL'd Xash3D FWGS engine, you still run non-free game code.
Half-Life source code written in C++ and C is avaiable at Half-Life SDK.
Half-Life SDK and it's derivates is a property of Valve Software.
