Should I put all downloads in Downloads, stored under a directory named
after where I got it from?

OR

Should I put music in Music, stored under a directory named after where
I got it from?

OR

Should I do some symlinking from ~/Downloads/ and hope all the symlinks
stay maintained? (This doesn't sound good.)

The way I do is the #2. But if you mainly download Music, then I think that #1 is more relevant.

I put music in Music, stored under a directory named after the peformer or composer, depending on which is more useful. In general I organize files based on how I use them, rather than where I got them. However, if your goal is more archival than functional then organizing them by on source is an interesting idea.

Yeah, I'm more concerned with archival. I do use them day to day, but I
want the locations of the files to be permanent and good for
presentation, just in case I want to dump the files somewhere public in
the future.
