My problem is that IceCat dosen't appear in the menu for the x-www-browser and if I link manually icecat to x-www-browser it dosen't open new links from apps in a new tab or a new window.

Trisquel's Abrowser is just the same thing as IceCat. Integration
problems like those you have prevent us from using IceCat.

I've used IceCat for a long time in Trisquel before recently switching back to the default browser.

It came across numerous bugs and issues that didn't appear in our rebranded version of FF. Plus, it takes up extra disk space unnecessarily from redundant dependencies.

The one advantage of IceCat is that it always updates to the latest feature release immediately (e.g. 3.5 -> 3.6), whereas our browser only does that between releases, but that doesn't suit our distribution model very well, especially since we have 3-year LTS releases.

Why do you want to use IceCat? As far as I understand, IceCat and abrowser are basically the same: they're both rebranded versions of Firefox, with the nonfree bits removed. Is there something you can do with IceCat that you can't do with abrowser?

How did you install Icecat?

There are numerous ways to install a program that isn't in the repos, including the raw and messy method, building it from the source archive.

IceCat is distributed in .debs, too: https://launchpad.net/~gnuzilla-team/+archive/ppa

Again, it's not recommended that you install it; you're not going to get something from IceCat that's missing in our default browser. Don't you prefer fewer bugs?

I was talking to iKonaK since I used the .debs and it works decent for me. The only reason I use Icecat is the bugs haven't affected me except for no Java and its the newest version. Can't abrowser use the newest version instead?

I hope iKonaK doesn't mind if I look for a little clarification. I'm new to all this IceCat vs. ABrowser business. I've been reading the threads about IceCat and here's what I understand. Please correct me if I'm wrong, or if you have anything to add....

1) IceCat is FSF approved.... but ... is not included in Trisquel because of bugs, etc... although situation is under review depending on IceCats stability.

2) As an alternative, Trisquel includes it's own modified Firefox browser called ABrowser. This browser gets updated by Trisquel updates and is supported by Trisquel.

3) Although this arrangement suits most people there are still some who prefer IceCat (I'm not sure why) and would like to install it in Trisquel.

Is that the situation?

Well, first I would like to thank you all for your reply's, thou I must say most of them are not exactly what I asked for.

Second, I want to explain that this was a technical, well software, problem and not a issue of browser choice.
I am aware that Firefox, abrowser and IceCat are basically the same thing, all thou the latest version often are different when it comes to abrowser.
I installed IceCat a couple of days ago, for fun i may say, and all thou I did used IceCat "intensively" in Jaunty and Dwyn, in Awen I used "abrowser" as default, and at this time I am still using it.

I also hope I settled most of the questions :)

"Can't abrowser use the newest version instead?"

We prefer the stability of not automatically updating to the latest feature release, especially since we have LTS versions that get supported for a full 3 years.
