hello, i downloaded and installed the printer drivers for a Brother MFC=J4535DW.

when i try to print, I get this error message:

there was a problem printing document: stopping job because the scheduler could not execute a filter.

looking at the queue i see: cups-insecure-filter.

would appreciate some help.

My opinion is that KDE, which is available from the triskel, has the best automatic recognition of the printer. I mean it depends on what desktop environment you are running to get the correct printer drivers.

I did not see your printer in the list of drivers, but you may try the generic brand. There are quite a few drivers, but maybe "PCL 6/PCL XL Printer Foomatic/pxlcolor" is the one that would work?

This is what I read on a brother support page.

... "generic Postscript/PCL driver can be used for Postscript or PCL compatible products.
If your product is a Laser product, you will be able to use the Ghostscript hl1250 driver or Ghostscript hl7x0 driver."

So if you using LXDE, if I remember that's Trisquel Mini, you can go to the launch applications menu -> Preferences -> Printers. It should prompt you to add a printer. From there it depends on how you have it connected.

I don't know if we can support the driver direct from Brother.

With Mate I guess it a is a similar process to Trisquel Mini LXDE.

I would seek Ianun's support too.

I would suggest a quick search on the "cups-insecure-filter" error.

And, possibly, make sure that all the relevant files in /usr/lib/cups/filter and /usr/lib/cups/backend are owned by root.

That said, h-node does not list many Brother printers as fully working with a libre system, so that might be another avenue. Assuming you are currently using Trisquel 9, did your printer work with a previous version of Trisquel?

The driver from the brother website appears to be nonfree. Yes, some of the scripts are licensed under the GPL but other files are sourceless binaries.

I suggest instead trying this driver which is free software under the GPL: https://github.com/pdewacht/brlaser/. It is available in Trisquel as printer-driver-brlaser, but I'm not sure what version.

I have a Brother printer that was not supported by the other existing drivers, and I tried this and it worked. If it works for you, you can open an issue in the Github repo to add official support for your printer.

I did not realize that driver can support multi-function ink jet printers.

Oops, never mind. I didn't realize this was an inkjet printer.

Maybe you can use driverless printing? IPP over USB, or connect the printer to a wireless network. And then try adding a "generic IPP everywhere" printer.
