icedove email won't delete

Set up icedove 60.9.0 32 bit, it loaded all the mail from server ok but won't let me delete any emails. Over 700 need deleting.
This is a first. How does delete work in icedove ?

I did it. Sort of. Pressing the delete button does nothing. The message has to be right clicked, move to local folders, deleted. rinse and repeat.
I don't know why the delete button won't work.

The delete key works here. Right-click on the account and choose "Settings" to take a look at the "Server settings". There is defined what to do "When I delete a message".

Thanks, that helps. I need to be careful not to delete emails from the server.
