installing latest Gnash

While trying to install the latest gnash release I get an error
"libavcodec-extra-52 (>=4:0.5.1-1) but it is not installable
libavutil-extra-49 (>=4:0.5.1-1) but it is not installable"
I was using the gnash source for lucid and I am running 4.0.1 so I am not sure why there is this dependency error. any ideas why these packages are not in trisquel's repos? I manually downloaded them from ubuntu repo's.
okay never mind actually I figured it out it was something I was doing.
If u solved any problem please post the solution so that others may benefit.. :D

Ubuntu puts those packages, along with libmp3lame0, in multiverse, which is their non-free component. However, from a very cursory glance it looks to me like these packages are in there due to MPEG patent issues; the actual code seems to be free to me.

That is what I thought as well can someone else confirm this as well. I downloaded the .deb files and installed them with dpkg in order to install the new release of Gnash. I doubt the Gnash team would depend on non-free code. if this is the case it might be something that we want to add to the trisquel repos... any thoughts?

+1 Should be in repo's...
I should also add that for whatever reason there is no build of Gnash 0.8.9 for Trisquel 4.5 the most recent ubuntu build is for Lucid. But I was able to install the Lucid version in Trisquel 4.5 with no problem except the packages that weren't in the repo.
I still have been unable to install the latest Gnash--even after I modified the PPA to Lucid.
Any suggestions on how to do so?

You could try the latest gnash from my "gnu ppa" (i try to update this quite often): https://launchpad.net/~dns/+archive/gnu
you just need to add my launchpad key:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 479B857B
and then this to your sources.list..
..if you have taranis, you have to add:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/dns/gnu/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/dns/gnu/ubuntu lucid main
..if you have slaine, you have to add:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/dns/gnu/ubuntu maverick main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/dns/gnu/ubuntu maverick main
PS: So far the packages are not compiled with any hardware acceleration.

Did the instructions as above but it will not update Gnash unless I remove the following:
browser-plug-in gnash
mozilla-plugin-gnash
swfdec-mozilla
trisquel-desktop-common-recommended
trisquel-gnome-base-recommended
trisquel-recommended
Are these safe to take out?
the 1st 3 should be removed/replaced yes... the last 3 are related to gnash also, because gnash is a part of default trisquel setting...
i checked it here (i use slaine) and i have not the "recommended" installed, i have these ones installed instead:
trisquel
trisquel-desktop-common
trisquel-gnome-base
For me it worx, but i cant give you a proof that its safe...
NOTE: the gnash packages from my ppa are developer snapshots and NOT stable versions.
The trisquel-* packages are meta-packages, i.e., packages that do not install anything by themselves but depend on a bunch of other packages (that you often want to install at once, hence the convenience of a meta-package). Therefore, it is safe to remove a trisquel-* package. The only trouble is, e.g., if quidam decides that a new software should be part of the default Slaine install, he will make it a dependence of one of the trisquel-* metapackage and only those having them will have the pleasure of discovering this software after a regular update.

@Magic Banana: If that's the case, I'll stick with my old Gnash until the newest Gnash version becomes a default.
Well, it may only happen when the next version of Trisquel is released. Usually, regular updates are only security and bug-fix ones...
Some trisquel-* are updated from time to time (yesterday for instance!) what should mean (although I have never tried to check) that the default install changes.
If you remove some trisquel-* you may only miss these new choices for the default install (and, again, no "real" software would be removed with it)... but, once the next Trisquel released, you will be able to remove the PPA and the Gnash package it brings (the newer Gnash package will be in Trisquel's repository) and reinstall the trisquel-* packages you want, hence back with the default choice of softwares (+ the ones you have installed so far).
