Hello,

I just got an email (from DefectiveByDesign and FSF) that mention this computer.

What do you think about this computer ?

Well, I'm quite impressed, mainly because its technical specifications
and the possibility to upgrade the CPU/processor[1] (although I don't
know if, by doing so, the user'll end up using some nasty low-level
non-free software that would come with the upgrade) when compared to the
previous computers from Minifree like Libreboot X60 and Libreboot X200.

Secondly, I'm also impressed because Libreboot T400 didn't even receive
the Respects Your Freedom certification yet[2], and the latest giving
guide is already promoting it[3]. :D

I actually sent an e-mail to the FSF's Licensing and Compliance Lab about this
asking whether the Libreboot T400 was actually RYF-certified yet or not, since
it is not listed on the FSF page you cited. Strangely enough, Minifree
advertise the T400 as being RYF-certified despite this.

Does anyone know who's in the wrong here? Has the FSF made a mistake and not
listed something that they have actually certified? Or is Minifree using the
RYF certification for advertising without officially having it? If it is the
latter, the FSF should be informed.

I queried the FSF about this.

Have you received a reply? I sent my query about a month ago, and either they
haven't gotten round to it yet, or they've just forgotten. Although to be fair,
the guys at the Lab are probably busy people.

I just sent the message and no. They are quite busy so we can only wait. This is certainly something that must be straightened out asap.

And then Francis showed up and straightened it out ASAP. Ah, the Internet.

Hehe, indeed. I also got a reply from the FSF who said the same, it's certified and they're working on this.

Will it play Crysis? No.

But non-free software and other heavy games aside, it should do YouTube, Impress, etc well.

Or at least I know the T60-aged HP nc6320 does.

Exactly. I upgraded it to 8GB of RAM and put in 2 SSDs and it's working great.
Not that you need to play FullHD movies on this display but it's working without problems. I am very happy with it.

I don't know if virtualization works with libreboot but I haven't tried out yet.

It's not a gaming machine but other than that it's a very fine laptop!

The T400 from Minifree gained RYF certification months ago, provisionally (because it's the same hardware inside as the X200), just without an announcement. An announcement will be made by the FSF in due course. The FSF is busy, so it takes time.
