Startpage gets its search results from google? Google cannot do something against it?
Google leaves startpage alone because startpage users are a small number?

I would want a free software version of google earth. You do not have to mention software like marble. Quality wise they are not comparable.

Could you make a free software proxy google earth client and server version wielding the google data? What would it cost?
Would google technically be able to stop it?

It would legally stop it. Google's satellite pictures and maps are copyrighted, unlike the URLs its search engine lists.

GNOME Maps (Emerillon in Trisquel 7) will be better in Trisquel 8: https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Maps

I read startpage has bought a license from google. I cannot tell if it is a correct piece of information.

I know this doesn't answer the question, but you could try KDE's Marble. It's the best practical free software alternative to Google Earth.

It is based on OpenStreetMaps, not Google's satellite pictures (that would likely violate Google's copyright, as someone has already mentioned).

QGIS
A Free and Open Source Geographic Information System
http://qgis.org/en/site/
Available in the Trisquel repos, this is really professional chart making software but of great interest !

The main challenge to replacing Google Earth is not the software, but the mapping data and satellite images. OpenStreetMap have done a good job of crowdsourcing map data for a libre Google Maps replacement, and their site becomes more useful all the time. Activists in some countries have convinced their governments to release the mapping data they hold, on behalf of the public, under a license compatible with OSM. For example, all the data in OSM for Aotearoa (NZ) where I live is official government supplied mapping data.

So mapping data is a relatively solved problem, but to create a libre replacement for Google Earth, we would need to find suppliers of satellite imagery who could be convinced to license it under a free culture license. It's not impossible, but it's a challenge. Are there are publicly-owned satellites that can create Earth images? Perhaps we could find a hip venture capitalist like Elon Musk whose company has satellites and would be willing to supply imagery for a Libre Earth?

Yeah, I use Marble, but the satellite images are very low resolution compared to Google's. They are from NASA, and there isn't really anything else because of the copyright issues.

Wait, why doesn't Marble use Landsat images? https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Landsat
They aren't as high resolution as the commercial ones, but much better than the ones used currently.

I presume that the StreetView imagery is kept under ARR copyright by Google? If so, creating a libre replacement for StreetView would be even more challenging. It would probably require a DIY kit that hacker space groups could use to assemble a StreetView style camera. Either one mounted on the roof rack of a vehicle, or one that people could wear on their head as they walked around their neighbourhood.

I would ask a "cool" company like SpaceX to GPL their satellite images.

OpenStreetMap is awesome indeed.

Be advised that, just like a free/libre system distribution, it's
recommended that you participate by mapping the places that are possibly
incomplete.
