Netgear WG111 v3 problem
- Login o registrati per inviare commenti
Supposedly this USB wifi adapter works with even a libre kernel, but my NetGear wg111 v3 which I ordered NEW arrived today ans does not work with my 4.5 installation. On the network monitor, it does appear, but no networks are available.
I have tried to enable wireless as it says it is disabled, but that option is grayed out.
How would I enable it?
Thanks
Is the blue light on? I just pulled my WG111v3 adapter out of my wifes
computer and plugged it into my laptop running Trisquel 4.5 and it has
connected without any problem.
Have you tried reseting your router perhaps? Are you sure that wifi is
enabled on your router?

No, the blue light is not on but it is listed in 'lsusb'. I have not reset my router but wifi IS enabled on the router, as I write this post from a laptop with wifi. The problem is that the network applet WILL NOT let me enable wireless via clicking the option even though I have some libre hardware. The option, once again is grayed out.
That's weird, could you try booting up a live session of 4.5 and seeing
if it works there? Perhaps you've changed something and that is causing
the issue.

Could you send the lsusb output?

Have you tried the usb card on another computer to make sure it works.
Maybe you got a bad one, because this is too weird.

Already way ahead of you on that one. I just used my live 4.5.1 USB stick and had the exact same problem, and when I tried to right click on the network manager and enable wireless, I was prevented.
At this point for me, it's not weird it's business as usual. It's always something...
Does dmesg give you anything relevant? Can you test the WG111v3 on the
other machine that you've got there with the live USB stick?

dmesg seemed to indicate detecting my non-Free BCM4312 card, but NOT my NetGear one. This is despite BOTH cards showing up when I expand the Network Manager applet. Beyond that, I didn't see anything relevant (I simply human-read dmesg)
I can't try out the live USB on this laptop as it belongs to someone else and I have already gotten into trouble for using Live Linux on this system. I think I've done more than enough by buying "supported" hardware. Not sure how I'm gonna get out of this one...
Oh, can you remove the non-free one or turn it off in the bios? My
thinkpad will give me trouble if I have my internal wifi turned on in
the bios even though there are no free-software drivers for it.

I turned the BCM 4312 off in the BIOS, rebooted, and STILL exactly the same thing...no blue light...perhaps I got a dud unit?
Really weird. The owner of the other laptop won't let you test it on
that laptop?

It should work. I have the version 2 of that USB thing. The light wont' go on unless networking is enabled (at least on v2). Lets go through the basics of diagnostics.
1st. Do you have another computer you could test it on? If it works on another computer it isn't a dud unit.
This is how it should look when you left click on the applet (http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/6641/screenshotptt.png)
And this is what should (keyword is should) appear when you right click (http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/7043/screenshot1bt.png)
You said the enable wireless toggle button was greyed out when you looked at the applet. Could you post a screenshot? You should be able to tick the box when you right click on the applet.
I have no other computers to test the thing with right now.
For some reason, I can take a screenshot by pressing the prtsc button, BUT when I click the applet to show you guys, it then will NOT let me take a picture. Weird, huh?
What I can say is that YES, I expected to get exactly what SirGrant has in his shots, but instead of a wifi network list, I get headers of the interfaces (ie, Wired Network auto eth0, Wireless Network (Broadcom 4312) and Wireless Network (Netgear wg111v3)
under both Wireless Network headings is the text "wireless is disabled"
When I right click the applet, Enable Networking is tickable, but Enable Wireless is NOT (but it does show)
This is a highly tailored problem, it seems...
You can use the take screenshot application in the Accessories menu and put a timer to take a screenshot (take screenshot after 10 seconds or so)
Also if you can I would like to see the screenshots if possible. Thanks.
As far as having no other computers is there any way later on you could find one in a reasonable period of time? Don't give up.
Here are the screenshots. My Dad has a Ubuntu Desktop I might try the thing in tomorrow...
Sorry I don't seen any screenshots. you may have to link to them. You can upload them to imageshack or something.
sorry I tried to attach them within this forum...

try now...
Are you sure that you turned the other card off in the bios? Have you
turned it back on?

Have you modified the any network manager config file, i vaguely recall
that this happened to me several years ago, and when i disable one line,
it got back to enable the Network Manager Applet on the desktop bar and
choose between networks.
My 2 cents...

He has tried a live session on a USB stick, so it won't be that.
Ok, I'm gonna research this a bit. I found some stuff on Ubuntu forums and it looks like this is a issue that a few people have and there seem to be some solutions. One seems to be try using wicd (another wireless networking program to replace network-manager) or there may be others. It seems to be mostly affecting people with laptops w/ internal cards. I have a desktop which may be why I don't have a problem.
I'll look around and get back to you (may be tomorrow) but don't give up. Gotta be a way to fix this.

I suspect that this is probably the issue, and he should go through
every menu in his bios to make sure that anything related to the
internal card is disabled.
I won't give up, thanks a lot for the moral support, and let's keep HACKING! Perhaps we will gain new insights...
By the way, I have a HP 2133 Mini Note
Nighty-night (knight)
Good night. As far as I can tell from preliminary research It looks like this is likely caused by having both wireless devices.
Can you post all the outputs as indicated here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6183681). While I know that is an ubuntu post it is actually really good advice for posting wireless issues. Should give us all the info we need.
I have the same dongle and got it to work only when the internal wireless was enabled. Switching on wireless was done on my laptops via a hotkey or a switch (of course you need to enable it in the BIOS first). The dongle's light turns on when it is activated.
Good news for all those now involved- I have plugged the dongle into my Dad's Ubuntu desktop and it immediately lit up! So it is not a dud! First I will try to disable the other wireless chip in the BIOS, if that does not work, I will be posting again. Thanks alot.
I just confirmed that the embedded WLAN is DISABLED in the BIOS along with "wake from lan" whatever that is...
I am suspicious though, because even with that option, the wifi led is still on although it is orange meaning not on...
I will post that diagnostic data Sirgrant requested later...
Wake from LAN is a way to boot computers that are off by sending them a special packet so you can power up computers remotely.
You may have to disable it via the function key (it's usually like function-f3) or something like that. Then from what I gather you may have to reboot.
You will not believe it, but pressing Fn- F3 worked at last! At first I thought my backlight was just being dimmed, as that is what fn-f3 does on my laptop, but to be SURE, I pressed shift-fn-f3. THen the network applet said "missing firmware" and then I inserted my Netgear and voila! I got the blue light and everything was FINE! Thanks Sir Grant!
Awesome! Glad to here it. Haha if we ever meet up in real maybe you can buy me lunch :D. Glad to hear everything worked out.
By the way, I am writing from my hp2133 with Trisquel RIGHT NOW, hopefully I will never look back now- I am FULLY LIBRE!

That's amazing news :)
I'm glad too about your great success, keep the path of freedom for
your/our own sake ;)
