Printing issues

Trisquel is acting strangely. First it refuses to print LibreOffice Writer 1.7.3.7 documents. The documents go to my HP Laserjet Pro 400, but only a blank page comes out. If I print a Writer document created prior to my recent upgrade to Trisquel 11, the page prints fine.
I reinstalled LO Writer; no difference. Next I tried to add another printer. No luck. The dialog box freezes after I hit the Add New Printer button.
Also, the printer seems very slow to respond on Trisquel.
I tried ABI Word for a test. Same problem as Writer. Newly created documents come out blank. Older docs print fine.
So I switched to another machine running SolydX and Writer 7.4.7.2. It prints everything normally. Plus, it prints much faster than Trisquel, despite being a much older machine with just 2gig of RAM.
Thanks.
Is the printer listed in the eponymous utility? If so, have you tried removing it?
You mean the Printers utility?
This utility is broken. I just deleted the printer but I cannot add one back in. It freezes.
The idea is actually to *not* add it: for many printer, the automatic configuration is fine. We are talking about a USB-connected printer, right?
Printer is network connected and served 5-6 laptops. It turns out that the Printer utility is not freezing but running very slowly. I managed to install the HP printer using IPP. It prints a test page but slowly. Tried to print from LO. It worked but SLOW.
There may be several drivers available. You can try them all, one by one.

I can just say that I was having issues where my Samsung M2070FW was printing gibberish over network and wouldn't scan at all but both issues were resolved when I switched to USB. Maybe not a solution for you but something to test.
I tested HPLIP, my old standby. It fails to print newly created LO docs. Then I tried a Driverless HP network printer. It works and prints new LO docs fine.
But the Printer utility still has a problem. Adding printers is very slow and the overall print operation lags. It was faster on Trisquel 10.
I note that Trisquel provides HPLIP version 3.21.12, but 3.23.12 is available. The version of the Printers utility is also slightly out of date. 1.5.16 vs 1.5.18. Not sure the version matters, but there may be a bug somewhere slowing the utility down.
Mark this issue as "fixed, for some values of fixed."
Many thanks!
I am using a Lexmark network printer.
Unfortunately, I did not write down the details, but when I search for network printers in Triquel, I find 3 entries for it with different options. I tried them all, only in one I could find a way to select grey vs. colour print, and not in an easy-to-find place. Besides, once an entry is selected, I was rather confused by the dialog box, about setting a name for the printer.
Also, I remember that LibreOffice was proposing me a network printer although it was not installed. However, it was not possible to select grey vs. colour print.
Hi Avron-to print in grey scale, hit Ctrl-P and go to the Libreoffice Writer tab. Tick the box that says "print in black." The box is indeed rather hidden.
The name of the printer is optional, I think. I have only one printer, so there will never be cause for confusion. I left it blank.
The extra network printers may actually be the same printer but with multiple names. My HP printer shows up twice, once as a normal HP printer and a second time as (I think) the CUPS server. I can print from both. Why does this happen? Who knows...
Thanks for the tip. I configured printing in grey scale by default. I will try "print in black" from another computer not configured that way. However, I have PDF files to print, so I don't use LibreOffice for them.
Yes, I know it is the same printer that appear 3 times.
I have a computer running Trisquel system-config-printer says no printer is installed, but atril sees the network printer and in the print menu, the last tab, colour, allows choosing grey scale or colour.
On another computer running Trisquel in the same network, I have the same printer configured in system-config-printer but in the print menu in atril, in the last tab, colour, it is written "Printer profile: no profile available" and there is no drop down menu to select colour or grey scale.
On that computer, in the settings in system-config-printer, when selecting "properties" in a right click on the printer, the 4th tab "Print job options" shows a "print-color-mode" that can be set to "monochrome" or "color". The choice made there effectively allows to control printing in grey scale or colour. This is not as nice but it works. My computer is in French but these menus are in English, which can be a problem for a number of users.
I have setup another computer in the same network with Parabola, by installing cups, enabling the service, and I added the printer via the web interface https://localhost:631. The URL for the printer is exactly the same like on the previous computer, but on the computer running Parabola, the colour tab in the print menu in atril has the same indication (no profile available) but has a drop down menu to select grey scale or colour, and it works.
Arvon-
On my Trisquel laptop. Atril also shows "no profile available" on the color tab. I think this is normal and it works fine. As far as the network printer not showing up, I can report that Trisquel found my network printer automatically, but was very slow to add the selected printer. Also the first driver I tried didn't work. (HPLIP) Luckily, IPP worked. Try experimenting with printer drivers. Hope this helps.
