Actually, the lack
of customisation was one of the things I liked about it, because what happens
whenever I'm offered something with more customisation, I spend hours
configuring and reconfiguring it
Exactly. Even with my minimal config I still spend way too much time on it...
About your workflow and the overview,
you can try Dmenu which is text-only, so it's maybe less beautiful (no icons etc),
but does the job probably even faster.
parabola :)
You haven't changed the menu bar's logo to Parabola's yet?!
It says Arch Linux!
It looks like you've been monkey-ing around!
I got a "new" desktop from my local Good Will to use as a server. I figured I'd have some terminal fun while I was setting it up :)
On a side note: If any of you live near a Good Will Electronics reseller they usually have some great equipment for next to nothing if you're working on a project that doesn't require top-of-the-line hardware.
Wow
how did you set that up?
Seriously, how'd you set up that beautiful desktop?
Details!
What's the icon & GTK theme? (It kinda looks like the Trisquel GTK theme, or adwaita...?)
I see that it is the Mint-X GTK+ theme, I like it a lot.
EDIT: My mistake, apparently the theme is called Greybird!
Is the dock plank?
Thanks for stealing my thunder SuperTramp! :P
That desktop is gorgeous!
thx tdlnx. It looks very polished and I like it! :)
Very easy to set up.
The theme is the old and glorious Greybird-master.
The icon theme is a slightly customized Numix-circle.
The window theme is Greybird-master.
The dock is plank.
I just removed the top panel in Xfce.
I then made a tiny top panel for applictions and set it to "alpha" 0 and "opacity" 100. This panel actually is just whiskers menu..which I modified with the file .gtkrc-2.0 (in attachments). I then proceeded to modify whisker menu from its settings menu.. When you are done with a panel you need to "lock" it and set the eventual separators to "invisible". Only this way you'll have a completely transparent top panel.
The middle top panel is just "orage panel clock". As all the panels this too is set to "alpha" 0 and "opacity" 100.
The third tiny panel is the notification area..
I used gtk-theme-config to change a color of the Greybird theme, that is the light blue of the selected items and menus to a more appropriate pale greenish blue..
Notice that there is no "windows buttons" plugin in the panel so all open applications get pinned to the plank and minimized in the plank. This is what makes the whole thing look very polished, with the top panel staying clean and nice.
Also, I was not very happy with thunar looks so I installed caja (which I really loved in mate).

Nice! Thanks for all the details!
ok, just wanted to point out that you really don't need three panels for this..
One panel is enough.
one big transparent panel with this setting in "items": separator, whiskermenu, separator, orage, separator, notification area, separator.
Then you expand the second and third separators and lock the panel. And that's all. Running three panels is silly. Go with one. I experienced some system freeze lately and the only thing I changed was this with the multiple panels.. I hope I'm right and now with just one panel the things go back stable..
cheers!
Multiple panels had nothing to do with my system freezing. In fact he issue kept bugging me after I set up the single panel. What did solve my computer totally and randomly freezing was backing up my data, wiping all and doing a fresh reinstall of my distro. So remember kids: whenever you have a serious issue you can't solve unless spending 50 hours reading and checking on the netz you just reinstall the os. it takes 2 hours and you smell freshness :)
Use X with Tmux and a light VM, it will run faster:
mpv as the video player
sxiv . Image viewer
cmus. Music
Icecat + blue firewall.
TMUX.
with the exception of Google chrome
it looks great!
i really i cant stand firefox or iceweasel, my school stuff is only working and testing Gnu/linux machines with out flash on chrome. i am fine with chrome right now becuase i can get school done.

You can try using chromium instead which is the Free Software project
on which Google Chrome is based on.

i tried but they said only chrome - the nuggets where working but not the main content!
"i tried but they said only chrome"
What kind of school is that? omg leave that shit. XD
only chrome?
what reason did they give?
I picked a new wallpaper!
@Alij- linuxacademy is a veery good school and i am getting ready for my exam (comptia+ linux Cert- i tried college the normal way. it suck...)
@tomlukeywood- their only testing on Chrome with this feature. is what i been told!
that’s bad :(
if you can you should protest against it.
i almost done studing for my CompTIA Linux+ certification that i really just need to focus on that then get rid of chrome :)
Have you looked at different themes? I find the default one a bit boring.
i acutally love this pokemon theme! before anyone goes and tells me it not free, i reallt dont care.this was the pokemon that was my favorite durring saphire and ruby. i am though currently working on a linux wallpaper!
I was not talking about your wallpaper, I totally get that :)
I meant your window and system themes. Are you able to change appearance properties?
i like it so far man :)
I have that wallpaper. i love it.
Lookin' good, jbar!
Thanks, xfce is very versatile apart from lightweight
You're going to hell, all right.
Not because it's supposed to look like Windows, but because the theme's ugly.
:)
If you're going to hell it'd be because of how half-ars*d your attempt was at actually making it convincing (I mean, flat-coloured panel and XP-logo-only Start button?) :)
