SyncThing is failing on Etiona

After I installed Etiona on my latest laptop (a Compaq Presario CQ71), I tried to install SyncThing using sudo apt install. apt told me it was already installed, although it was not present in the applications menu. So I launched it from the command line and it seemed to work fine, launching the web UI automatically after starting the back-end. But a few days ago it stopped working. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Here is the output it spits out:

I would do what the log asks:
panic: runtime error: slice bounds out of range

Thanks for pointing that out :) I searched there for "panic slice bounds out of range". No open issues, but I did find a couple of closed ones that might be relevant?
https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing/issues?q=is%3Aissue+panic+slice+bounds+out+of+range+

The most recent one is from April 13 and talks about a bug that's been fixed but is yet to be pushed through update channels:
https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing/issues/7568

But there are a bunch from 2019 which suggest that the problem is the age of the version of SyncThing in Ubuntu (and presumably also in Trisquel). Here's an example:
https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing/issues/5651

The version of SyncThing on the older laptop still running Flidas is installed from their own repo at apt.syncthing.net/syncthing and works fine.

Have you read /home/strypey/.config/syncthing/panic-20210426-133517.log (mentioned in the second message I quoted)? It may be more specific than just "slice bounds out of range".

FYI SyncThing is working again on Etiona. I guess some dependency got updated or a fix got rolled out for bug in some other package that was interfering? It's still not working terribly well, but again, I suspect that's to do with the mismatch in the versions I'm using across my various archaic devices.

Incidentally, the version of SyncThing in the Trisquel repos is 0.14.43. The version on my Android, released a couple of weeks ago is 1.15.1. As with Jami, it's really a disservice to users for user-facing apps to have versions that old in the repos, especially when they are too old to really function properly.

Agreed. It is also arguably a disservice for the app itself, assuming that a more recent version would provide a more convincing user experience.

It sounds like a good idea to have Jami in the repo, but probably not installed by default. If it is, then the user experience should at least be determined by the last released version.

That said, #20210326 jami-gnome and jami-qt are both available on Guix, which can be installed on Trisquel without too much of a hassle.

Jami still provides via apt latest updated builds for Ubuntu and the indication on how to configure apt for that used to be on Jami download's page, this is what I am still using on Trisquel 9 and it works.

This should be:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install gnupg dirmngr ca-certificates curl – no-install-recommends
curl -s https://dl.jami.net/public-key.gpg | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/jami-archive-keyring.gpg > /dev/null
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/jami-archive-keyring.gpg] https://dl.jami.net/nightly/ubuntu_18.04/ ring main' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/jami.list"
sudo apt update && sudo apt install jami

I took this from https://www.atechtown.com/install-jami-ring-on-debian/ but changed debian to ubuntu (and I checked in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/jami.list on my disk)

Now the suggested method is snap. Perhaps we should complain?

Avron:

That's not what I see on the Jami downloads page (https://jami.net/download-jami-linux/). When I click on the Trisquel tab, the first option offered is a .deb download and the second option is instructions to add their repo to your software sources. Snap is offered as a second option for those who've already chosen to use Snap. See attached screenshot. I don't think there's anything to complain about here.
