System 76 is rolling their own distro based off of Ubuntu.

Please let them know that you want them to make it truly Libre and Free (as in Free Speech).

They can't make it libre and such. Only free as in gratis. Because all of their customers have laptops that need proprietary software in order to work, like WiFi firmware. So they can't make it 100% libre without cutting off their customer's stuff. If only they'd been selling 100% free computers to people from the beginning...

I think it would be helpful to educate them on what they can do to appeal to people who really care about software freedom. Unfortunately the only way to reach people with lack of information is to take this approach.

We can try but I'm not to optimistic about it. They are just interesting in selling "A powerful Linux laptop" rather than a laptop that respects users rights.

Thanks for sharing the link. I put my 2c in to get the discussion rolling. Would be cool if other people on this forum would blow that thread up.

I think Onpon4 would be the right person to leave a comment on that issue page.

I'd hate to see it go downhill, turn into a race to downvote different views. It's crazy they have this system up. An invitation to be trollish.

No need to just leave it up to onpon4... We all how our views that are worth sharing about this.

The only suggestion I have is that they should do the same thing Debian does (since never mind Nvidia cards, many System76 machines require proprietary firmware for wireless cards if I'm not mistaken). That's already been brought up. And I'm not exactly well-known, so it's not like they're going to care what I think.

What is the point? It's just a rebranded Ubuntu.

I'd like to interject for a moment. What you refer to 'Ubuntu' is indeed Debian + 5 minutes of custom work - all the blobbery.. :P

It's like those OEM-modified Windows images-- e.g. Dell laptop with Dell wallpapers, pre-installed with drivers, etc.
This just brands some things (like wallpaper) "System76" and pre-installs the System76 drivers.
It's nothing worth note... it isn't supposed to *truly* be different from Ubuntu-GNOME, just to make things smoother for
users of System76 PCs. Why bother trying to get them to make this libre, when they're clearly just trying to stick to
Ubuntu-GNOME? It would make more sense to try to convince them to switch to a libre system and then make their
own rebranded and driver-added distro off of that.
But again, they won't. This is System76, the want to make sure they have a smooth ride for the Ubuntu users who
buy their PCs. Their market is only nominally the "open-source crowd," and not at all the "libre crowd."
