Interesting alternative to WhatsApp, Viber and FB Messenger, Telegram is for smartphones and desktops. Its software is GPL licenced. I think many smartphone users will consider switching now since Facebook has bought WhatsApp: https://telegram.org/

There are few downsides that might make the project unsuccessful.

Sadly it does not have federation yet, and it is not clear is it going
to have. [1]

The project is relatively new (August 2013) [2] and uses custom protocol
[3] that still has to prove itself. They had a contest to prove it is
secure. [4] The reward was $200,000 in Bitcoins for the one who breaks
the encryption. No winners.

I personally will monitor their progress with great interest.

I recommend using Kontalk [1] instead.

It's also available on F-Droid [2].

The only problem is that it asks for your cellphone number when setting
it up for the first time. As far as I know, the number is used to check
whether the cellphone using Kontalk is the same one which receives the
code.

Best regards, ADFENO.
Have a nice day.

What is wrong with XMPP? It was developed specifically for this use case but people are still creating new protocols instead of using an interoperable standard. It looks like Kontalk started out with their own protocol but have switched to XMPP, which is good for them.

Telegram uses their own protocol, which does not support federation, coupled with a proprietary server application. For many here, that is unacceptable.

Thanks for all your comments. Looks like there's plenty of alternatives to WhatsApp, Viber, etc... already. I found another GPL Jabber client for smartphones called Xabber, I think it supports most of the protocols: http://www.xabber.org/
