I just switched to Compiz, and got all my beloved desktop affects back. Why doesn't Trisquel 5.5 have it be default?

Perhaps because a lot of graphics cards won't manage the fancy graphics. Better to ensure as many cards will work for a standard desktop and then have the option available.

I use GNOME Shell with graphic effects, but I think the default installation
should have Compiz as the old versions.

In my opinion it would be perfect if the Trisquel added a search tool (such
as synapse), with high resolution icons and graphics effects in the default
installation. Users use the default, only advanced users change the theme,
font, graphical environment(KDE, XFCE)...

We can propose this idea for quidam to add in the next version with long-term
support.

And compiz should come with a manual.

I think its best if the default installation is compatible with as many computers as posible. so no compiz as default but with an option to turn it on. I would also prefer a universal version with no default desktop but gnome, xfce, openbox, kde, mate, FVWM and many network, modem and usb-broadband drivers included. it would make trisquel more free in meaning of free to decide and more accessible (for example for people with no internet connection). I think I'm not wrong when I say that most 3squel users love the freedom of free articulation and most important the freedom to choose!
