Trisquel Installer for 5.5

The Standard installer (Gnome 3) stalls on.
log-output -t ubiquity laptop-detect (see attached screenshot)

I'm on a desktop machine which I built myself so I suppose that could be an issue. My PC isn't a brand or laptop. Perhaps this laptop-detect fails because there is no information?

Previously I used the network installer which works without a problem.

Anyone have any thoughts on this issue? Is it a bug?

Thanks,

It probably has nothing to do with it being a custom built machine.

You know I had a similar issue although I don't think it was exactly the same. I left my computer on while installing and then went to a class and came back (~2 hours later) and it was done. I don't know if there is some sort of hangup but what happens when you leave it and just let it do it's thing? I'm not saying taking an exceedingly long time is not a bug but we have to make sure it isn't really frozen.

Is there any reason none of the replies in this mailing list include
any quotes from messages they answer to?

Just curious, it makes it that harder to follow some threads.

Maybe because the list mirrors the web site forum, from which most of
the messages come? If you're reading the forum on the web site, threads
may be easier to follow, especially visually, without the quoted text?

I did hit skip but the installer was stalled or froze.

I used the net install to bypass the problem.

Installing trisquel 5.5 using a USB drive the installation seemed to freeze similar to what you describe. In the gui there was the "Please wait" with the cursor spinning. It appears to have stopped at the same spot as your screenshot.

In my case it appears there is a malformed command somewhere in the installation script. Using "top" I noticed a line similar to the following:

"sudo wget -o /dev/null -O /dev/null ftp://in.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel//speedtest"

I believe the line is incorrectly formed as a server at in.archive.trisquel.info does not exist but archive.trisquel.info does. In addition I'm not sure the double "//" is correct. Using "sudo top" to identify and kill this offending command, the installation seemed to move ahead and complete.

Hope this helps work around and perhaps fix the bug.

USB flash drives are flaky. The technology can only handle so many writes. If
you try and write bit for bit over an entire drive most will fail after 1-3
fills. The better ones might last up to 15.

This may also explain why I never get the first message of such threads.

I've disabled all filters I had on Trisquel lists so I can track this
down. Thanks for clarifying this.

There are bugs in the software which synchronizes the mailing list and
the forum. That's why some messages might not get to the mailing list.

Assembling a computer on your isn't something that easy mess up, if
you are not being careless. You shouldn't worry much about assembling
a computer on your own.

This is an old Ubuntu bug. You need to perform the install while
having your netowrk cabled disconnected. Took me a couple of times to
figure out.

I experienced the same bug during install. After many repeated attempts I found this post and tried the install without an internet connection, and it worked.

May I suggest that this bug would be an important one to fix. Who knows how many people have been put off Trisquel here at the first hurdle? I would have had to choose a different distro if I hadn't found this post.

I made a forum account just to post this. Many thanks to the developers of this excellent free distro, but please fix this bug! (or at least warn people to disable internet if they get the bug!)

My understanding of the release process here (similar in Ubuntu too) is
that once a release is out the oven, it's done.

Except for LTS releases (so, upcoming Trisquel 6 series), there won't be
new versions of the installer, so this bug will remain - it would be a
good idea to test this in the upcomgin version 6 and see if it still is
there.

If anything, this should be highlighted in release notes, but there
won't be a new installer for 5.5.

Cheers,

I used the net install to avoid the problem, It took longer but was worth the effort. Not only did I end up with the freshest possible install but It offered some security options and gave me a better understanding of text-based installers.

Thank you everyone for your feedback and suggestions

Speaking of the trisquel installer, I had some strange issues with my
installer this past week. My dvd-cd drive went out on my laptop, it no
longer functions, so I dragged out a usb one that plugs into my computer
and then into the wall. Trisquel started up just fine, and ran ok on the
disk, but when i went to run the installer I got past all the steps,
partitioning, user name, timezone, etc. Just after teh ubiquity slide
show pops up I get an error that the installer cannot copy files to my
hard drive, input/output error. The installer thinks teh dvd is dirty or
dammaged, and I should clean it. i'm not so sure about that. I think
maybe the usb dvd drive has trouble keeping up with teh requests coming
to it from trisquel. does anyone have any ideas? I'm trying to install
trisquel back onto this laptop after breaking it trying to install
voxin, grins. On 04/29/2012 03:39 PM, name at domain wrote:

I had these kinds of messages on a netbook with bad RAM. Replacing the RAM fixed the problem. Not saying this is the problem with your computer, but it can't hurt to run memtest86+ (available from grub once installed) just to make sure.
