If I wanted to use Trisquel as a server OS but I do not want the desktop environment to be installed. Should I use the Trisquel net-installer iso, I am assuming there is an option for disabling installation of the desktop environment. Unchexkong that option.

Also, what web-server should I use?

Isn't Cherokee a GPL licensed web-server?

Also. Is Cherokee easy to install and configure. I checked their site and it even looks as if they have a web interface for controlling the server which is damn awesome.

Trisquel makes a fine server OS, and there is an option to disable the GUI during installation. I personally like the net-installer iso, but if you have a large number of installations to perform, you might want to consider one of the other options to minimise repetition of downloads.

Options for free-software HTTP servers include Apache (the most popular), Nginx, Cherokee, and probably many more.

Apache is apache licensed. The Apache License is a permissive license, which is still free software, but not copyleft like the GPL.

brltty
brltty-espeak
brltty-flite
brltty-speechd

Here's their home page http://mielke.cc/brltty/

I guess those might be of interest to you. Take care!

you could still try running tab window manager
to use as little memory as possible

people have run tab window manager with only 4 mega bytes of RAM!

I think the net-inst will work perfectly. Who is using Apache on their server if your server is a web server?

>Should I use the Trisquel net-installer iso?

Yes. I think that the CD images for installing a graphical environment also contain the netinstaller, but it doesn't uses the packages already in the CD, it downloads them from a mirror. I am not completely sure.

>I am assuming there is an option for disabling installation of the desktop environment.

Yes, there is.

>Also, what web-server should I use?

Web server software is usually very flexible. There is no single server software that you “should” use. I have used Nginx which is efficient in resource usage and easy to configure using a text configuration file. LigHTTPd is also efficient in resource usage, but I do not have experience with it. Apparently Apache is harder to configure and much less efficient than the other 2 mentioned server software packages.

I think when I setup my RaspberryPi as a server I will use lighttpd. As I have used it before, and I think it is quite fast.

In terms of CMS software. WordPress is licensed under the GPL. So that would be good then right? As I have experience with using WordPress and installing many CMS manually. Well from what I can remember.

Although I can just apt-get it also. :D

Download and install it manually, the version in the packages is very out of date. This is true for all “content” management systems.

Just use nginx. You can get the latest stable for Trisquel 6 and 7 from https://launchpad.net/~nginx/+archive/stable

out of interest in what way is nginx better than apache2?

Doesn't it render Perl automatically.

Although there are modules for apache2 thatvcan do that, I think there are, I am assuming so
