Hello all.

I'm pretty new to GNU/Linux, and have been using and getting to know the basics of Ubuntu for about a year, which I installed on an old Inspiron 1520.

I would like to make the move away from Ubuntu to Trisquel for all the reasons you know so well.

I have burned Trisquel Mini to disk and would like to replace the Ubuntu OS on this 32 bit Insprion 1520, (or be able to dual boot) but I'm having a bit of a time finding a tutorial to help me install Trisquel Mini from Ubuntu.

I'm so new to GNU/linux I really need a tutorial to follow.

Any help pointing me towards a tutorial would be apprecaiated.

I have looked at the " Migrate from Ubuntu to Trisquel without reinstalling", butI don't know if Trisquel would work on this machine as well as Trisquel Mini. Is there a Trisquel Minin migration script?

Thanks for any help.

I'd suggest just burning the .iso, and installing. You can always back up your home directory, and note your repositories, and what programs you have installed. I don't know how old your computer is, but from what I hear Trisquel is light on resources. You could test by installing to a USB stick, just change your boot priority in BIOS, and move "Boot from USB" to the top.

Thank you for the welcome, Magic B.

Okay: I got Trisquel Mini partitioned successfully! Huzzah!

The OS loaded from a burned disk nice as you please, thank you very much Ishmael. (It took some time on the old Inspiron 1520, but it did the job.)

One hiccup: after install I could not get a network connection. So I will scour the forums and see what that is about.

Again, thanks for the help!

Run lspci and lsusb in a terminal. Post the output here.

I did both, but cannot get the info to this forum. No wifi of course, and any attempt to copy and past to a doc, then to a flash or exsternal HD all ends with "Error opening file'/media/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/zem': Read-only file system". So I cannot even transfer it to send.

When I have a moment I will type it out. It is not terribly long.

Thanks,

Zem

Write the file as root.

$ sudo bash -c 'lspci > /media/Seagate\ Backup\ Plus\ Drive/lspci.txt'
$ sudo bash -c 'lsusb > /media/Seagate\ Backup\ Plus\ Drive/lsusb.txt'

EDIT: Actually, your error message looks like the filesystem is mounted read-only, so you should run this before writing the files:
sudo mount -o remount,rw /media/Seagate\ Backup\ Plus\ Drive

Thanks Legimet,

I did try running:
sudo mount -o remount,rw /media/Seagate\ Backup\ Plus\ Drive

But I got the error message:

mount: can't find /media/Seagate BackupPlusDrive in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

Did you type that command exactly with all of the spaces? There's a space after each backslash.

Oh: yes I did.

If it's quicker just type the output of lspci and lsusb manually.

You have a "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG" wifi card. This uses nonfree microcode so it's best to get a USB WiFi adapter from Thinkpenguin or Tehnoetic.

Thanks! I'll contact ThinkPenguin and get a recommendation.

Finding free Wifi drivers can be annoying, if you can connect the computer through ethernet, you might be able to find something in the repository. There are some non-free wrappers for driver blobs, but I cannot recommend them. This site (recently shared with me by a member) will list good free approved hardware:

http://h-node.org/wifi/catalogue/en

Getting wifi to work was one of the biggest obstacles for me to overcome when I first started Learning, but the computer I have now has a free one, so no more issues. It may actually be easier to replace the card than find a software solution. Changing a wireless card can be almost as easy as changing RAM. It is likely close to the RAM, and pops out, and inserts the same way too. There just should be two wires (one black one white) that pop off with a screw driver, then just insert the new card, and press the the two pigtails back in the same spot on the new card. Hope that helps. Luck

Be careful though. According to h-node.com there are some computers that prevent installing wifi cards not-approved by the vendor. My old mackbook was one of them :(

Chris has mentioned that it's a particular group of companies that does this. From memory, I know the list includes Apple, IBM/Lenovo, Toshiba, and HP. I think there are a couple others I forgot about.

I got my ThinkPenguin USB/Wifi card. Now I'm up and running on Trisquel Mini!

Its looking very good. Running like a top. You will no doubt here from me if I run into trouble, but so far I'm extremely pleased.

Thanks for all the help.
