Hi I just found this:
Apparently it is a fork of Trisquel. Here is the website:
https://uruk.tuxfamily.org/dist/en.html#about
It looks nice but I am not sure if the little recognition of Trisquel benefits them, because they don't seem to have documentation and that can hurt new users that need help.
What do you think?
Yea, alimiracle's working on it.
Looks pretty cool-- it's nice that we have a free GNU/Linux distribution more geared towards Arabic now.
It looks really nice :)
I was thinkin about installing it, but I don't have much time right now, maybe on the weekend.
It takes a while for Trisquel to prepare a new release, after releasing Ubuntu LTS image. Uruk is based on Trisquel, so it is again going to take some more time. So it will take more time for Uruk users to get their hands on new stable software packages.
And yes. They're using MATE as default desktop environment which will provide more customization options comparing to GNOME fallback version.
This seems to be how they write Uruk GNU/Linux in Arabic. Pronounced [oo-rook].
أوروك جنو / لينكس
Also, they're using 'J' instead of 'G' for GNU/Linux.
I think it's the case with Jamal/Gamal. The Egyptian pronunciation is closer to g than ch/j.

Chattanooga Chnoo Chnoo.
Yeah. This is called Arabic Script [1] and is written Right-to-Left.
I tried to write my forum name in Arabic. I still remember something. I took a short course of Arabic decades ago. It's pretty easy when they write long vowels (like 'oo-boon-too'). Short vowels have no mark in everyday text (only Quran). So Trisquel is 'trskl'. The rest is consonants only. It's called an abjad.

لولدير
This is Trisquel (took it from Wikipedia entry).
ترسكل
In Farsi (Persian) they write it differently (with a long 'i')
تریسکل
They also write GNU/Linux differently with a 'g' (modified from the character for 'k') that is not available in Arabic
گنو/لینوکس
Debian
دبيان
Ubuntu
أوبونتو
gNewSense
جنيوسنس
The Maltese language, Malti, is basically Arabic written in the Latin script. It has evolved and borrowed many words from Italian and Sicilian but the core words are still intelligible with other dialects of Arabic. You can get a picture what Arabic would look like if it was written in our alphabet.

Bravo!
Let us not forget most of the population of the Middle East,Africa,Asia & India,Central Asia & Asia are young(in comparaison with Europe & North America continent) and this could should be considered a top priority by the FSF & GNU.org.
Initiatives like these are more than just "another libre distribution (rare)"
where we to see a Chinese,Indian,African,Japanese fork of Trisquel ;-)
Making a better world for everyone.

I tried to run live/install Uruk, but I get an error message (below) that stops me just after GRUB. This is on an iMac if that makes a difference. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

May you open another thread for extra help
& don't hesitate to write to the Uruk mailing list

Thanks again MD! I will press F6 while my computer starts to turn on (?) nomodeset. I will try the other possibilities too.
A funny thing happened with my iMac recently. I tried to boot Uruk with the F6 procedure. It didn't bring up the menu to turn off nomodeset.
The iMac doesn't have an eject button for the DVD drive. So ... when I turn it on it tries to boot Uruk, but doesn't, and I can't eject the disc to escape from this loop!

I'm surprised at the hardware you all seem to have. I've been running an 8 core CPU with 16 GB of RAM and an Nvidia GTX 970 for almost two years now.
I run old hardware and can't really tell the difference. That's one of the beauties of running GNU/Linux. I'm not a gamer, and I love light window managers. I run pekwm right now, and I love it.
Uruk has a new (?) domain name
