Using the WLAN card on a Medion notebook

Today I've installed Trisquel on the notebook of a friend who had problems with Win7. It's a Medion E7216. The good news is: it has the Intel HD graphicscard, so the GUI runs very smooth, compiz and all. The WLAN card is recognized as
08:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8191SEvB Wireless LAN Controller (rev 10)>

but I can't seem to get it to connect. I have a secure WLAN network at home with the WEP 64-bit key. I went to the "configure connections" option from the tray symbol and added a WLAN network, but there was no option for 64-bit WEP, only 128-bit or 40/128. I tried them both out, with no success, the WLAN card doesn't connect.

Am I doing something wrong? Since the card has been recognized as Realtek, I'd assume it should work with Trisquel. How do I setup the WLAN connection?

During the setup I used the cabel network, which works 100% out of the box.

The driver can be downloaded behind this link: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=48&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true#2262

The driver is licensed under the GPL but the firmware is proprietary (check out the file named Realtek-Firmware-License.txt in the ./firmware/rtlwifi/ directory:

Redistribution and use in binary form, without modification, are permitted provided that the following conditions are met:

That is why this Wifi chipset is is not supported in the linux-libre kernel and, by consequence, by Trisquel.

thanks for the info, this means either installing Ubuntu or a WLAN usb-stick. The owner said he had a WLAN usb-stick, so Ubuntu might be not necessary in the end.

Hopefully he has a stick that is supported by Trisquel.

Lets hope he does, I'm unwilling to install a Windows XP. In the case he doesn't, I will try Ubuntu or Fedora. Still better than a completely proprietary system after all.

Compiling the driver in Trisquel is not that hard either but I will not help you with that.

Would you help us adding it to h-node as not working with free software?
Thanks! ;)

I'll get to checking the functionality of the WLAN stick soon, then I'll also add the thing to h-node. It looks like everything else works, it has the Intel X4500M graphics card. Also on the plus side is, that some of the shortcuts (like volume adjustment) work 100%.

The webcam may be a huge problem though, because the shortcut for enabling it doesn't work in any GNU/Linux. In BIOS you can only make it work "as before", so you have to enable it in Windows, then install GNU/Linux and test it. I didn't know that and simply wiped out the harddrive and left it disabled, so now it is very difficult to test if it works or not. I've got a Windows live CD for file-undeleting purposes (and many others), hope it will be enough to boot from it in order to enable the webcam.
