I am looking for recommendations for a VPN, preferably based in the US. I had been using Private Internet Access, but its Linux installer stopped working on Trisquel months ago. The PIA browser extension for Firefox still works on abrowser, but over the past month I've been getting many disconnects. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I use Proton VPN myself.

https://protonvpn.com/

Their Linux client isn't great but I was able to get it running on Trisquel. They have U.S. servers but aren't based in the United States. They have a free option to try but you get more options and servers to chosoe from on the paid version. Some of their code is open sourced for sure but i'm not sure if all is.

My choice after trying some vpn services is Airvpn

https://airvpn.org

They have a config file generator so you don't have to install any additional software. That's also my recommend way to use their service. Servers in the USA are also available.

I just gave AirVPN a glance and am impressed. They have a lot more options for their GUI client than ProtonVPN. They also seem to offer some good options from a security standpoint. The only thing that gives me pause so far is the company is based out of Italy which is a 14 eyes country vs Switzerland for ProtonVPN..

Got to put in a word for PenguinVPN from ThinkPenguin which has been a supporter of Trisquel.

I love ThinkPenguin as a company but they're based out of the United States so I would have to assume their VPN is as well. I wouldn't trust a server based out of the United States or any 14 eyes country they have agreements with if I have other options. Also I didn't notice any link to source code on their site although I may have missed it.
