dear forum
i used a thinkpad T430 with trisquel. for WLAN i installed a Qualcomm Atheros AR5B95. unfortunately the backlight broke. now i use a T430S. unfortunately the Qualcomm Atheros AR5B95 is no longer accepted by the bios. on my service request lenovo only sends me a list with the compatible replacement parts. unfortunately a whitelist with the allowed WLAN cards was not available.
who knows which WLAN cards with open source drivers are accepted by the T430S?
thanks a lot
daniel
This is the evil about proprietary software, by things like that.
I recommend you to build coreboot with me_cleaner and flash it into your Thinkpad T430s, T430 is compatible, and maybe T430s too. Not sure because I only flashed T430.
Maduel, I'm not so sure, perhaps this Thinkpenguin WLAn card is suitable, see: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/wireless-n-pci-express-dual-band-mini-half-height-card-w-full-height-bracket-option-tpe-nh
The only problem is the price. Otherwise you could try with an USB adapter as this: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb
At pag. 94 of this manual https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t430s_t430si_ug_en.pdf the instructions for replacing a PCI Express Mini Card for wireless LAN/WiMAX connection.
See h-node too: https://h-node.org/wifi/catalogue/en/1/1/undef/undef/undef/undef/wifi-works/undef?search_string=AR9285&submit=Search
Ask libreleah if T430s can be osbooted or corebooted, I am guessing it couldn't be too much different than the regular T430.
So don't despair yet! ;)
Also, if you can use me cleaner on it, ANY WIFI CARD will work!
:)
EDIT: I meant any ath9k wifi card will work... ;)
because my job unfortunately requires me to have windows installed, i can't use libreboot.
so if i don't want to install a proprietary driver from the intel side, i guess i have to go for the usb variant... THANKS for the help
had i known this: so finger away from the T430S, with the T430 i found a good solution without proprietary drivers
Maduel,
the wireless N PCI express dual band mini half height card by Thinkpenguin is compatible with Windows. The h-node.org hardwares use free driver "ath9k", see:
- EDIT -
I use these USB adapters and they work well, see:
https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-w-external-antenna-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usbl
https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb
I never said libreboot, it isn't even possible to libreboot any laptops with third gen processors from intel or onward.
I meant, osboot, or coreboot or skulls or heads.
But if you have to use windows, your already in a sticky situation...
