Haswell 3-d support?

Hi! I'm trying to get hardware acceleration working so I can run gnome shell. The computer in question has a haswell i3-4130 processor with the HD4400 graphics chip. I tried installing jxself's latest linux-libre kernel but that didn't seem to work. Is there anything else I can try or am I out of luck?

Also, and of secondary importance, I was unable to boot this computer from a net-install disc. This is my first encounter with restricted boot so I am guessing that this is the reason? Is there any way around this?

Thanks.

Further to my second question...the error message given when I try to boot from the netinstall disc is "Machine check error". I expect it's related a some bios setting, but quite which one I don't know.

hmm machine check error I think might be the one related to the wifi card. Quick search should reveal an answer for sure. I don't believe this specific feature classifies as what would be refereed to as restricted boot. Restricted boot is something that prevents you from easily booting other operating systems. What this is is digital restrictions though and that's also very bad. I'm going to guess you have a Toshiba, Dell, HP, Lenovo/IBM, Toshiba, Sony, or Apple system. Probably not the last one as I believe Apple uses a proprietary wifi card instead of white listing (ie USB based with proprietary connector of some sort).

I believe that for 3d acceleration support you need both a newer kernel and xserver. I know that at least on some of our machines with haswell the xserver component has to be upgraded for the 3d in addition to the BIOS. Right now Trisquel doesn't back this component backported. However there is good news. Trisquel 7 which is based on Ubuntu 14.04 is right around the corner. That will definitely solve the problem with the lack of 3d acceleration support.

Ruben is going to preview Trisquel 7 at Libre Planet on the 22nd or 23rd of this month. From the testing we've done it's still got lots of issues, but hopefully they'll be shored up soon enough.

Translation (auto-translated):

Sorry I only speak Spanish.

Install the latest kernel: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/ ~ kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2014-03-06-trusty /

Use this PPA: sudo add-apt-repository ppa: xorg-edgers/ppa

After only one update related to the intel drivers (mesa, xserver-XOG, among other related), because otherwise it is ruined.

Important, do not upgrade kernel or anything else, just things related to graphics.

...

Not quite sure I followed that 100%, but it might just work. My only concern is that it might break Trisquel. It might not too, but it's definitely something to be concious of.

You might also be able to use the official backport of xorg from Ubuntu. I haven't tried this. For the most part Ubuntu and Trisquel are near identical so in theory there should be less of a chance anything will break.

To install the newest backported kernel and xserver

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-saucy xserver-xorg-lts-saucy libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-saucy

Thanks for the replies everybody. I had suspected that the updated base of Trisquel 7 would solve this problem, but if and when I get a working computer I will definitely try your suggestion, Lembas, so thanks for that.

I say if and when because this morning I have been arranging to return the computer in question. I finally fixed the net install problem - all it required was to switch the bios to legacy. However, confusion was caused by the fact it seemed to take a dozen re-boots for these changes to be suddenly adopted. Once I was able to boot from the net install disc, everything went fine and I installed Triskel with nothing unexpected happening. Upon reboot, the desktop was as expected albeit with the signs of video driver issues. However, following the next re-boot - nothing. The computer froze on the bios splash screen and I can do nothing with it. After running the same computer for 8 years without a single hitch, I must admit to being pretty annoyed with this.

To Chris: The computer in question is a Zoostorm model. I'm not sure these can be bought outside of the UK and they are a cheap model, largely targeted I think at business users. The bios they use is ASUS with an H81 motherboard (not sure of the make). The only reason I went for this computer is because I'm on a low budget and it was the lowest price barebones pc I could find with a decent spec. Definitely a case of lesson learned though. If I can, I'm going to try and get a refund rather than a replacement and put it towards something that might respect my freedom more. Can I ask if Think Penguin ship from the UK? I would love to buy a computer with gnu/linux pre-installed, but I'm slightly put off by the idea of unknown import costs.

The import costs are not unknown. For the UK it is 20%. It's the same tax rate you pay within the UK. They just call it something different and stores don't advertise it separate to that of the products price.

Send us an email and we can give you a break down of near-exactly what you'll end up paying (I say near-exact because the specific number depends on what the USD to GBP exchange rate is the day customs makes the bill, the difference will almost certainly be near inconsequential given the dollar amount of the laptop being imported though). The delivery time for the shipping method we recommend for the UK is 3-5 business, expedited, (DHL, also expedited method, is 1-3 days, faster, but more expensive).

I wonder if a dead BIOS battery could be the culprit here?

If it is it certainly happened at a very unfortunate time. Seem to be quite a few people running gnu/linux on zoostorms too from what I can see.
