Hi,

Do we know when the mirror at fsf will be back in business?

It's nearly a day since it's been down.

Thanks,

Are there (authorized) alternate sites to the fsf mirror for updating Trisquel and downloading packages?

Thanks,

The FSF is moving around servers and it should be all good to go by March 1st: http://www.fsf.org/blogs/sysadmin/gnu-fsf-servers-are-moving

Thanks! I stumbled onto the fsf announcement just before I checked back here.

Curious...

Are there disadvantages to using mirrors other than fsf?

Are they all updated at the same time?

Will Update Manager still know when it's time for an update if I switch?

Newbie questions, I know...

but thanks!

Mirrors are exact copies of the repository. Switching to another one would not give you any more or less features. The main repository is not that of the FSF. It is in Spain. I guess the packages are sent to the FSF mirror in a matter of minutes (hours?). As a consequence, the availability of an update will be delayed by this amount of time.

However I do not think you keep on polling the repository in search of a new update, do you? If you do, that is not very cool for the project: if everybody would do the same, the connections to the repositories and the server themselves would be overcrowded and the project would need to invest. Anyway, downloading from the FSF server (rather than from Spain) probably is faster if you live in America. It is like "caching" at a worldwide scale.

No, I learned that the fsf mirror was down when I was notified of an update by Update Manager and it stalled while trying to download the packages. I then checked via apt-get update and saw that the mirror was unavailable. I'm curious more than anything - not concerned about having the latest update.

I'm in New York, so fsf is just around the corner. :)

Thanks,
