Help! GUI doesn't install????

I just installed Trisquel Mini on a 9 year old laptop (previously running Windows XP). Everything went smoothly, except that I didn't get the GUI. When I start the laptop, the attractive Trisquel desktop background appears, then it turns into a terminal where I can login.

Same thing happened when I erased Ubuntu on my 2009 Toshiba and tried to install Trisquel. Now I have two GUI-less laptops.

What's going on? Didn't get any errors. How do I remedy this?

I just tried to install Trisquel 6 again on the 2009 Toshiba laptop...at the scanning the CD stage, I got the error message:
"An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the CD failed."
I clicked okay.
"Installation complete. You need to restart the computer to use the new installation."
When I hit restart, it froze.

There may be problems with your CD. Anyway, I suggest "burning" it to a flash drive instead, using something like unetbootin (which can be searched for on the web). Unetbootin supports non-free distros, though.

There's a version http://www.aligunduz.org/FUSBi/ that doesn't list non-free distros but it's quite old. But I reckon it'll still work, despite being old.

@davidnotcoulthard

I do have it on a USB drive, made with Unetbootin. Same results when I try to install it that way...

I also selected the "check CD for errors" feature. It all looked good.

Are you sure you burned Trisquel Mini and not Trisquel NetInstall (whose default install is terminal-only)?

Anyway, you should try to install the Trisquel Mini environment on top of the currently installed system. You just need to log into the terminal session and execute this command (that will ask for your password again):
$ sudo apt-get install trisquel-mini trisquel-mini-recommended

If the command tells you that both packages have already been installed, then you had burned Trisquel Mini in the first place. You should then show us the output of this command:
$ startx

Otherwise (the packages were not previously installed), just reboot:
$ sudo reboot

You could as well avoid the reboot and directly ask for the graphical display manager but I am not sure of the command to execute (probably 'sudo service lxdm start').

@Magic Banana

Thanks for your response, it helped...but still some issues.
After typing in
$sudo apt-get install trisquel-mini trisquel-mini recommended
it seemed to download some packages, some said previously installed.
I then rebooted, still ended up at terminal.
When I ran
$ startx
I got the message:
-bash: startx: command not found
I then tried
$ sudo service lxdm start
just for the heck of it, went straight to the Mini desktop after it prompted me for my passwords. Was really excited, and explored around. Unfortunately, after rebooting I was right back at the terminal screen and had to enter this command to go back to Mini desktop.

So, basically, the only remaining problem is that LXDM does not automatically start, right?

The problem may be in GRUB's configuration. Take a look at the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT variable in /etc/default/grub. If the keyword "text" is present then remove it (you will need administrator's privileges to edit this file) and execute:
$ sudo update-grub

A subsequent reboot will tell if your problem is solved.

If the variable in /etc/default/grub was OK, then try to add LXDM as a script to start at init time:
$ sudo update-rc.d lxdm defaults

If that still does not solve your problem, we could look at /etc/init/lxdm.conf and see if LXDM is supposed to start at runlevel 2 (it should be).

@MagicBanana

I didn't see anything that said "text" in /etc/default/grub. This is what it looks like:

# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
# For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
# info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

# Uncomment to enable BadRAM filtering, modify to suit your needs
# This works with Linux-Libre (no patch required) and with any kernel that obtains
# the memory map information from GRUB (GNU Mach, kernel of FreeBSD ...)
#GRUB_BADRAM="0x01234567,0xfefefefe,0x89abcdef,0xefefefef"

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console

# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

# Uncomment if you don't want GRUB to pass "root=UUID=xxx" parameter to Linux
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true

# Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entries
#GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true"

# Uncomment to get a beep at grub start
#GRUB_INIT_TUNE="480 440 1"

# Trisquel comes without kernel recovery entries to improve security.
GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY=true

I added the LXDM script:
$ sudo update-rc.d lxdm defaults
successfully, but I didn't see any changes when I rebooted.

That configuration file looks OK for a graphical system. Let us take a look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Looks like /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/swrast_dri.so is missing. Install libgl1-mesa-dri. (or the matching lts version of it if you have a newer x.)

@lembas

I entered this into the terminal:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install libl1-mesa-dri
Recommended that I install the following:
$ sudo apt-get install libglide3
All new packages installed with no issues.
Still won't go to the desktop on reboot. ? Not sure if I have a newer x. Not sure what an "x" is?

I guess that wasn't it then. The xserver is a thingy behind graphical operations in GNU/Linux https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xserver

Trisquel is based on the lts (long term support) versions of ubuntu. Because (the kernel and) the xserver can be critical for hardware compatibility, there are backports of these from the non-lts ubuntu versions in between the lts releases. E.g.

xserver-xorg-lts-precise - X.Org X server
xserver-xorg-lts-quantal - X.Org X server
xserver-xorg-lts-raring - X.Org X server
xserver-xorg-lts-saucy - X.Org X server
xserver-xorg-lts-trusty - X.Org X server

If you haven't upgraded your x, then you've got the original precise stack. I don't know whether it would help but I guess it wouldn't hurt trying

https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installing-latest-backported-kernel-and-xserver

Perhaps somebody else has better suggestions.

Well, not really. As I wrote earlier, we could check that /etc/init/lxdm.conf starts at runlevel 2 but I see no reason why this script would have been modified.

An idea: it may actually be that gnuby's system is not booting into runlevel 2. Let see: what is the output of the following command?
$ who -r

gnuby
Offline
Beigetreten: 10/10/2014

@Magic Banana

After running
$ who -r
I got the output:
run-level 2 2014-10-14 14:10

I'm not totally confident about installing the latest backported kernel and xserver, does anyone else think this is a good idea? If it is I'll do it.

That is the proper runlevel for a graphical boot... I don't think there can be a problem in the script but let see anyway: can you show us the beginning of /etc/init/lxdm.conf (the lines with "start on" and "stop on")?

Enabling Trusty's graphical stack is not hard nor dangerous (easy to revert if something becomes wrong but it should not: it is the graphical stack of a long-time-support version of Ubuntu after all!). However, it does not look like your graphical stack is the problem since 'sudo start lxdm' brings you the graphical login screen. It only looks like the 'init' does not automatically start LXDM for some reason.

Unless someone else has a solution, the fix I propose is to write 'start lxdm' in /etc/rc.local (before the 'exit' line).

@Magic Banana

This is what is in the beginning of /etc/init/lxdm.conf:
start on ((filesystem
and runlevel[!06]
and started dbus
and (drm-device-added card0 PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY=1
or stoppped udev-fallback-graphics))
or runlevel PREVLEVEL=S)
stop on runlevel [016]

Is the syntax as simple as the two words, when adding to /etc/rc.local, "start lxdm"?

The script is OK: it should start at runlevel 2 (in fact it starts at any runlevel but 0 and 6) and stop at runlevel 0, 1 and 6. Since you are at runlevel 2, I really do not understand why it does not start.

I think it could indeed work to write "start lxdm" before the 'exit' command of /etc/rc.local. If not, try writing "/etc/init.d/lxdm" (directly executing the init script).

@Magic Banana

This is pretty frustrating...sigh, still no progress. I used sudo vi to insert and save what you suggested into /etc/rc.local. Then rebooted, still coming up to terminal on boot.

Is there any harm in using sudo service lxdm start longterm? I was hoping to take this laptop with me on a trip, and at this point I don't have much more time to invest fiddling with it. It's inconvenient, but with just a couple extra steps I do manage to get to the desktop where I can use Midori...I just want to be able to check my email while away... ):(

No harm whatsoever. We precisely try to automatically execute that command at init!

By the way, you can more simply write:
$ sudo start lxdm

In fact, you probably simply want to directly start the graphical session (without the login screen). I believe the following command does so:
$ starlxde
