The English version of this post follows the Portuguese one (sorry for the spam for those of you who do not live in South America).

Porém, a maior contribuição dele é filosófica.

  • 29 de maio, às 14h em Belo Horizonte, Brasil: "A Free Digital Society" (palestra em inglês com tradução simultânea em português, usando 300 fones de ouvido) no Auditório Nobre (640 assentos) do prédio CAD1 no campus da Pampulha da UFMG;
  • 31 de maio, às 16h em Campinas, Brasil: na sala CB-06 do Ciclo Básico (antigo) da Universidade Estadual de Campinas;
  • 2 de junho, às 18h em Curitiba, Brasil: "Free Software and Your Freedom" no Auditório Professor Ulysses de Campos no Setor de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas da UFPR;
  • 5 de junho, em Buenos Aires, Argentina: "Tu Libertad en el Uso de Computadoras y Telefonos" (palestra em espanhol), horário e lugar precisos a serem determinados;
  • 7 de junho, às 17h em Santa Fe, Argentina: "El Software Libre y tu Libertad" (palestra em espanhol), no Rectorado da Universidad Nacional del Litoral;
  • 9 de junho, às 17h em Buenos Aires, Argentina: "Copyright vs Comunidad" (palestra em espanhol), lugar preciso a ser determinado;
  • 12 de junho, às 17h em San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina: "Copyright vs Comunidad" (palestra em espanhol), no Anfiteatro da Facultad de Ingenieria da Universidad Nacional de Jujuy;

English version:

Richard Stallman needs no introduction... but here is one anyway! Richard Stallman is the author of the GNU GPL, founded the Free Software Foundation, and started the development of the GNU operating system (including GNU Emacs, GCC, the coreutils, etc.), which we and tens of millions of GNU/Linux users love. However, his main contribution is philosophical. He is the father of the Free Software Movement. He identified four freedoms that each one of us deserves to be in control of her computing. Stallman now dedicates most of his life to advocacy. In particular, he travels the whole world to eloquently spread awareness about the Free Software Movement, its ethical foundations and its social and political necessity.

Richard Stallman will deliver eight talks in Brazil and Argentina, starting with "A Free Digital Society" in Belo Horizonte on May 29th. Here is the whole list:

  • May 29th, 2pm in Belo Horizonte, Brazil: "A Free Digital Society" (talk in English with simultaneous translation in Portuguese, using 300 headsets) in the Auditório Nobre (640 seats) of the CAD1 building in the Pampulha campus of the UFMG;
  • May 31st, 4pm in Campinas, Brazil: in the room CB-06 of the Ciclo Básico I (antigo) of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas;
  • June 2nd, 6pm in Curitiba, Brazil: "Free Software and Your Freedom" in the Auditório Professor Ulysses de Campos in the Applied Social Sciences Sector of the UFPR;
  • June 5th, in Buenos Aires, Argentina: "Tu Libertad en el Uso de Computadoras y Telefonos" (talk in Spanish), precise location and time to be determined;
  • June 7th, 5pm in Santa Fe, Argentina: "El Software Libre y tu Libertad" (talk in Spanish), in the Rectorado of the Universidad Nacional del Litoral;
  • June 9th, 5pm in Buenos Aires, Argentina: "Copyright vs Comunidad" (talk in Spanish), precise location to be determined;
  • June 12th, 5pm in San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina: "Copyright vs Comunidad" (talk in Spanish) in the Anfiteatro of the Facultad de Ingenieria of the Universidad Nacional de Jujuy;
  • June 13th, 6pm in Salta, Argentina: "El Software Libre y tu Libertad" (talk in Spanish) in the Universidad Nacional de Salta, precise location to be determined.

Stallman will be selling items to the benefit of the Free Software Foundation: please bring cash.

I'll try talking to my parents and also to course coordinators in the
college where I study so as to try to go to the event in Curitiba, June
2nd. I can't guarantee anything though. :)

I would also love to hear if there is a caravan going to Curitiba which
passes through cities such as Itajaí, Balneário Camboriú, or Itapema.

Again, the English version follows.

  • A palestra do dia 31 de maio, às 16h em Campinas será "Your Freedom as a User of Computers and Cell Phones";
  • No dia 17 de junho em Brasília, Stallman proferirá uma palestra apenas para os participantes do evento "Campus Party";

I should have waited a little more before posting: I have just received news, including two other talks in Brasília, Brazil:

  • The talk on May 31st, at 4pm in Campinas will be "Your Freedom as a User of Computers and Cell Phones";
  • On June 17th in Brasília, Stallman will deliver a talk to the sole attendants of the "Campus Party";

* English (en)

Magic Banana, I have noticed that the introduction to the text says that
"there's no need to present" Stallman, and I do know that at least here
there is great number of people aware of differences between "free/libre
software movement" and "open source development model", but I do have
one suggestion to make:

If you do know the organizers of the event in which Stallman will give
his speech, make sure that full introduction is given. This is needed
because people would otherwise confuse the two groups of
proponents. Besides, I once saw a talk where Stallman complained due to
the absense of introduction about him.

* Português brasileiro (pt-BR)

/software/ livre. :)

That case about watchers/listeners not understanding the language he was
using to present the speech was, as far as I know, fault of coordinators
for not doing one of the following:

- Requiring filling a registration form that ask which language is
understood by the public.

- Getting people to make simultaneous interpretation of what he speaks.

It's not fault of the watchers/listeners if they don't understand the
language being used.

At least in the event in Curitiba, this June 2nd, I know that the event
coordinators are asking for donations in order to provide a
translator/interpreter that will translate from English to Brazilian
Portuguese. For those who want to donate, please visit

It's not clear from the video what happened. The video starts at about the
time of the kerfuffle and nobody's perspective except rms' is mentioned
clearly. I don't get the impression rms was disappointed at himself and I'm
not sure there's clear reason for him to be disappointed in himself.

Here's my guess at what happened:

Richard Stallman (known as rms) speaks fluently in English, Spanish, and
French. rms gives talks around the world, typically these talks are
recorded and published on https://audio-video.gnu.org/. Before giving a
talk, rms sends the talk organizers a list of his needs via email.

rms had asked the audience in which language he should give a talk. Most of
the audience said English was acceptable, so he spoke in English.

Some of the audience complained that they couldn't understand him in
English but they waited to raise this complaint until very late in the
talk, well after the talk began (perhaps closer to the end of the talk),
and well after rms had made points in the talk that one needs to understand
in order to understand his conclusions. Therefore even if rms were to
switch to another language mid-talk, the justifications for his conclusions
would not be clear to those who didn't understand him to this point.

When someone raised the issue of language to rms (presumably at some point
during the talk), rms asked the audience again and noted that a small
subset of the audience could not understand English. rms became angry that
such a fundamental matter was being complained about and anyone was trying
to renegotiate this so late in the talk. He also asked that this talk not
be published (a request the publisher of this not-completely-in-context
recording apparently did not honor). rms asked how he should continue and
nobody in the audience responded, so there were no practical answers given
as to how to continue so everyone there would understand him. rms repeated
that at this late point in the talk continuing on in a language some could
not understand would constitute "failure".

Was the language not agreed to before the talk began?

If the language was agreed to, was the language not made clear to the
audience before the talk began?

Surely once the talk began people who don't speak that language would have
immediately noticed this and raised this as an issue right from the start.
Did they not choose to do this?

I don't agree with rms that this is a failure, but I don't think he handled
this well. It seems like a failure to communicate clearly on the part of
some audience members who should have conveyed early that they don't
understand the talk in the chosen language. This could have been rectified
immediately, particularly with a speaker fluent in multiple languages. It's
hard to tell what happened, but it's possible rms should have dismissed the
audience members that didn't convey their preferred language early and
continued on in whatever language he'd already given the bulk of the talk.

For me, that incident had a mix of causes:

- Question being not handled correctly by RMS.

- People pointing it out too late.

- Organizers not asking which language the audience understands.

And... My, that video is still on-line??? That's a shame for three
people:

- The uploader, because RMS asked him not to record/upload it.

- RMS, although we can't really blame him, everyone has days of
overwork. Besides, he seems to be one of the few free/libre software
speakers that travels around giving speeches nowadays, this is
probably why he is now suggesting people to become free/libre software
speakers --- for me, I would go further and also suggest that such
speakers try to pass our ideas correctly.

- Free/libre software activists, because thanks to this video, people
who don't know a free/libre software activist with which they can
clarify things will probably assume bad things about RMS. Some people
do know a free/libre software activist they can talk to --- or are in
some group with such goal ---, and in these cases we can still explain
things.
