As I understand it Icedove is Thunderbird with the proprietary artwork and plug-in repos removed. Yet Thunderbird is in the Trisquel repos and Icedove isn't. How then can the verion of TB in the Trisquel repos be free?

I felt the same way. :P
There's several instances of non-free code still lurking in Trisquel that they are working on. Parabola is doing a much faster process of removing these packages and replacing them with full libre conterparts, their blacklist may be of use to anyone who wants to screen their own PC and/or contribute to fixing them in Trisquel - https://wiki.parabolagnulinux.org/Blacklist

There's also a PPA for icedove, but it is a bit dated and I've not heard anything recently from the GNUZilla team -

There's a related bug

Seems like it has been open for almost a year. Why has it not been corrected yet?

We need to build a package helper (perhaps similar to the Abrowser
package helper) to automatically rebrand Thunderbird. I think Ruben
hinted in the developer meetings earlier this year that anyone who wants
to get these things fixed can step up and do it.

Andrew.

What's the point in donating to the Trisquel project where he gets the money but then wants someone else do do this for him?

I still think that having a stable, non webmail desktop email application is important. I've tried Geary, but after their failed crowdfunding campaign (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/04/geary-fundraiser-fails-at-half-way-mark), I've had to resort to using Thunderbird on Trisquel. The PPAs for the Icedove project is pretty stagnant, but at least there are security updates for Thunderbird around the time of the Firefox release.

Where would I obtain a copy of the Abrowser package helper?

In the package-helpers git repository:
http://devel.trisquel.info/gitweb/?p=package-helpers.git;a=summary

Just do
git clone git://devel.trisquel.info/package-helpers.git

to get a copy.

Andrew.
