So I know that we have been working on 4.5 for sometime. At this point when ubuntu 11.04 is to be released very soon why keep working on 4.5 and just go straight to the next release based on 11.04? thoughts? maybe I am just being short sighted.

4.5 could be released tomorrow for all we know. A release candidate means (for all intents and purposes) it's already released, barring any major bugs that remain. Ubuntu 11.04 will be released about a month and a half from now, and allowing three months for the process of making the Trisquel release based on it, that means nine months since the release of Taranis, which is a really long time between releases.

Why would Ruben scrap the months of hard work when we're already 99% of the way there?

It takes Ruben ~6 months to do a release (strip out non-free software and make necissary modifications). We are always about 6 months behind Ubuntu. What AndrewT said is correct. It is basically 99% done.

I don't want to speak for ruben but if you watch his 3.5 video he says he waits a month or two after a Ubuntu release to make sure the upstream ubuntu people iron out most of the bugs. Since 11.04 isn't even done there is no point in starting.

It takes me less, but I start two months after Ubuntu releases.

We are a bit under 5, but it is still too much. Luckily, the current
release delays where caused by the rewriting of a big set of
development scripts made to automate the compilation process. This
means that releasing will be easier for now on. The goal for Trisquel 5
will be to publish it two-three months after Ubuntu's release.

In any case, the final T4.5 will be ready today.

I stand corrected.

Is there a way to update from 4.0.1 to 4.5 without a new installation?

Just do it from the update manager. It gives you the option to dist
upgrade when the normal release update is activated on software origins.
