Hello all... I'm new to Trisquel, but not to Linux. I've been on Suse and Red Hat for years now. As with every distro, I'm not familiar with the package management system; since it's deb based.

How would I install amarok 1.4 (rollback from A2) on Trisquel? I'm not at all a fan of the A2 changes they did. Is my only option to compile it from src? Or is there some weird change I do with the package manager to pull from an unlisted repo?

Hello Psyber. You can try install A1.4 using debian packages. Compile is very complicate because you need devel packages.
On Debian Lenny using by default A1.4 but I don't know if it's work good. I will have a backup of system before. Try to download this package and install with:

sudo dpgk -i *.deb
on the directory when you download the deb packages.

http://packages.debian.org/stable/amarok

If you need depend package you can use the Trisquel's repos with:

sudo aptitude install name_of_package

Aptitude is similar to YUM on Red Hat ;)

Trisquel is based on Ubuntu and Ubuntu is based of Debian (unstable and experimental). On Ubuntu's repo don't exist A1.4, only A2.2

Sorry for my english :)

Do I have to do something weird to get MP3's going as well? I'm running of my FSF Member card and it doesn't seem to play mp3s.

Also, do you know if the version from debian.org repo is "broken"? I had to fuss around to get MP3's and the Mysql DB working in Suse.

I just want to make sure my "vitals" are going good and ready before I blow away my suse install. My laptop doesn't like downtime. ;)

thnx btw

Interesting, I've never had a problem with playing mp3s in Trisquel 3. Maybe it's a LiveUSB thing...

AmaroK by default runs on gstreamer. Go to Synaptic Package Manager and install "gstreamer-0.10-fluendo-mp3". Now try playing an .mp3 in AmaroK.

A fully free distro does not include the ability to encode mp3s, though, so the best option is to build your music library with .ogg and to purchase a music player that runs well on RockBox firmware (or at least one that supports .ogg files).

Crap...

It says the dpgk command could not be found.

I have this in my /etc/apt/source.list (or whatever it's called)

http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian lenny main

I also downloaded http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/a/amarok/amarok-dbg_1.4.10-2lenny1_i386.deb and tried the dpgk -i *.deb which said it couldn't find the dpgk command. Tried right clicking and the GDebi Package Installer said something about a broken index.

um... HELP!!! THE SILENCE IS DEAFENING!!!

Interesting...

Your best bet at this point is to format that USB drive, download the Trisquel ISO of your choice, and write the ISO to that drive using the UNETBOOTIN program.

Ouch! I'm sorry, is dpkg -i *.deb. I'm dislexic hehehe. Well, I'm going to try to install Amarok this afternoon.

Well.

You must to download this file to your architecture. (on the botton part of page)

http://packages.debian.org/stable/amarok

When you used Gdebi you must to look out the broken package on Debian's repository and install it in first place. You must to do several time this step for install amarok.

In my case I needed install
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/amarok-engine-xine

If you use GNOME:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libgpod3-nogtk

using KDE:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libgpod3

and other packages.

This happend because A1.4 used Qt3 library and A2 is using Qt4.

BUT when you'll try to update your system is possible that any depend could break

is there an easier way than going through Dependency Hell?

Maybe add some repo so two versions show up in the add/remove software?

The easier path is using the current AmaroK, I'm afraid to tell you. :)

But otherwise, you're going to need to satisfy the outdated dependencies if you really want to use 1.4.

I recommend you use Exaile or Banshee (my favorite). They're very Amarok-like and are for GNOME.

I would ... but, it seems that the mysql db option feature is diabled or removed in the version I get from the repo. I very much need it due to the large music library I have; 160GB+. With the standard setup; sqlite I believe, it is very very very.... very very very slow. I've also become somewhat dependent on the option features that 1.4 has and is now no longer available in the repo A2 version.

Supposedly, A2 is supposed to have all this stuff. But, the ones that I've been finding all have it disabled or something for some reason.
